Most Helpful Customer Reviews

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By M. Jacobs on January 20, 1999
Format: Audio CD
The World as it is Today comes complete with song book and really hits out at the way society has come together. From its distant agricultural roots to its latter day industrialism, Dagmar Krause (lead singer) exposes society's awkwardness with reference to the greed that formed it. An absolute classic, musically challenging, but folky enough to be totally accessible. Winter Songs is not so refined idealogically, however, but with tracks like "Rats and Monkeys", it shows their talent even before they crystallized. This LP is more architecturally inspired, and "Three Wheels" is a magnificent musical edifice. Personally, I think "Hopes and Fears" was a better album, but it just isn't available on CD. I have a test pressing on vinyl with a hand-written letter to the record company, asking them to review it. I don't know whether it ever got publically released, but if you're an Art Bears fan, keep looking. Hopes and Fears is musically even better than The World as it is Today.

This CD contains the Art Bears' second and third albums, the best of the three. Dagmar Krause is the vocalist, which should tell you how fine this music is. The albums have a curious medieval quality, but are full of contemporary social criticism.

The late 70s/early 80s Art Bears were multi-instrumentalist Fred Frith, percussionist Chris Cutler, and the extraordinary German singer Dagmar Krause. This is what Progressive Rock should be but rarely is - exciting, adventurous, risky and smart.
