About the Author

Miss Read (1913-2012) was the pseudonym of Mrs. Dora Saint, a former schoolteacher beloved for her novels of English rural life, especially those set in the fictional villages of Thrush Green and Fairacre. The first of these, Village School, was published in 1955, and Miss Read continued to write until her retirement in 1996. In the 1998, she was awarded an MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, for her services to literature.

From AudioFile

The chronicles of village life in rural England, filled with truisms and seasonal detail, soothe the listener and recall a quieter, and kinder, time and place. June Barrie has narrated many of these charming books and here pays tribute to the older women of the village with the kindness that the author feels for each one. Her voice is perfect for the gentleness of the narrative. Barrie is as competent with the speaking males as she is with every other aspect of Thrush Green. These books are generous in their understanding of the world and the foibles of mankind. Nothing earth-shattering happens, but everything carries the drama and wisdom of lives led in close society. The listener is transported to Thrush Green. B.H.B. If you want nostalgia, and something to give you happy thoughts as you go to bed, then read Miss Read's stories of Thrush Green, the characters are charming. I couldn't put this book down as I became so involved with the villagers goings on, I needed to find out more about their lives. Reading the Thrush Green stories is like having a soothing "cuppa" close by !

I like Miss Read's Fairacre and Thrush Green books a lot, including this one. But as another reviewer note, this kindle version is full of typos that obviously came in when it was converted into azw. Very distracting. I was pleased to see so many of her books now on kindle, but hesitate to buy more for fears of quality problems with other volumes. If you want to read this do not buy the kindle version, get a used paperback for less without the problems.

I love Miss Read's books, and this one is completely charming. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is that this edition (kindle) is littered with typographical errors. So many misspellings take away from the pleasure of reading! Miss Read would not be pleased.

Inexcusable. As many as three on a page! Even characters' names. Sec for see, unI'll for until, ad for all. Terribly distracting. Surely someone could proof-read.

I just love all of Miss Read's books. My mother has quite a few of them and I read all she had when I was still at home. I purchased this one for her Christmas present last year, but before I wrapped it I had to read it! It didn't disappoint me. Whenever I'm in need of a comforting, heartwarming story I pull one of Miss Read's books off the shelf. They're perfect for a cozy evening by the fire.

We listened the this tape on a road trip. My 9 y.o. daughter and I enjoyed it very much. We talked about the unusual characters and wondered what they would do next!!!

I have enjoyed every Miss Read book I have ever found, whether in the secondhand bookstore, the library, or now, on Amazon. This one had slipped through the cracks, and I felt lucky to find it. Of course, I was not disappointed by another trip to Thrush Green to visit with the friends.

This tranquil novel takes you back to a quiet time when people were gracious. The descriptions of the landscape are amazing, and the characters are charming.
