A Blend of Gentle Romance, Light Suspense and Strong Faith,
By FaithfulReader.com (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Winter Winds (Seaside Seasons #4) (Paperback)
After leaving her husband three days after their wedding and fleeing to San Diego for six years, nothing could make Dori MacAllister return to Paul "Trev" Trevelyan. Nothing, that is, until Pop --- Trev's grandfather --- is suddenly taken ill. Pop and his wife Honey raised Dori from the time she was seven and left orphaned when her parents were killed in a drunk driving accident. Dori packs her bags to go back East, little realizing that the suitcase she takes off the luggage carousel at her journey's end will be someone else's --- someone who will stop at nothing to get that suitcase back. When Dori is reunited with Honey and Pop, a pitifully ill Pop extracts a promise that she and Trev will live together as husband and wife for the next six months. Unable to say no to him in his condition, Dori and Trev agree. Soon, Dori discovers the hard-drinking Trev who she left years ago was so devastated by her desertion that he has turned to God --- and become a pastor. Suddenly Dori sees Trev with new eyes, "wonderful, tall and strong, full of character and depth, a man worth knowing." Wooed by Trev's romantic courting, Dori finds her anger at Trev's imagined past misdeeds beginning to dissipate. She discovers that Trev has taken in Ryan, a 13-year-old boy whose grandmother and caretaker is hospitalized and unable to run Harbor Lights, the Christian bookstore. Wanting to help Ryan's grandmother, she takes the neglected business under her wing. Trouble is simmering just under the surface. Trev has his hands full with Bob, a member of his church who has left his wife and small children for Penni, "all wide eyes and hard edges." When Trev tells Bob and Penni they can no longer participate in church-sponsored activities until they end their adulterous affair, Bob threatens to raise questions about Dori and Trev's marriage that could cost Trev his job as pastor of Seaside Chapel. Meanwhile, the suitcase of stolen goods remains with Dori at Trev's house, and the thieves plot how to retrieve it. Fans of the "gentle read" will appreciate such evasions as "...Dori knew she and Trev had the proverbial snowball's chance in that eternal hot place" and other conservative prose handlings that make for a squeaky clean read. Readers will need to suspend disbelief to enjoy the story; the premise that Dori and Trev would be married for only a few days and then live apart for six years, all because of a slight misunderstanding, may be a stretch for some. Some characters are one-dimensional --- Vinnie is the stereotypical criminal, and Joanne the cliché moll whose naiveté readers will recognize from any gangster movie. Yet the pacing is pleasant, many of the characters are enjoyable (churchgoers will quickly realize "the three Graces") and there are surprises that help keep the pages turning. Although this can be read as a stand-alone book, readers may want to begin with the first installment, SPRING RAIN, followed by SUMMER SHADOWS and AUTUMN DREAMS. --- Reviewed by Cindy Crosby

Great Finale to this Series,

This review is from: Winter Winds (Seaside Seasons #4) (Paperback)
I need to book a ticket to Seaside. This tiny resort town on the New Jersey shore came alive under the deft storytelling of Gayle Roper. The fourth book in her Seaside Seasons series deals with marital trouble that takes on epic proportions-- a full six-year hiatus. We see Trev and Dori struggling with past hurts and stubborn pride against the backdrop of a full-blown art theft ring in which they get tangled. If you start this book, plan to read it straight through-- it's not an easy one to put down.

Winter Winds in the Summer,

Wow! What a book! I could not put it down. When I finished I just wanted to say "Hallelujah"! I was so engrossed in the freezing snowstorm in the second-to-last chapter that I had to remind myself I was reading the book on a warm summer day. The entire book just came alive around me. I felt the characters were friends of mine and I was living through this experience in their lives. This book is the fourth in a series that I have enjoyed. Each book addresses contempory issues in an easily read text. It is a combination mystery and love story in which we see how people respond when God's will doesn't align with theirs. The letter to the readers at the conclusion is the 'icing on the cake'! Than you, Gayle, for this fourth book in the "Seaside Seasons" series.

I got this series by accident from my book club and put it on the shelf for a while because I really wasn't interested and was too lazy to send it back. I'd never heard of Gayle
Roper, and in general find Christian fiction to be rather weak and sometimes cheesy. However, I picked up the first book 2 weeks ago and yesterday just finished "Winter Winds", the fourth in the series. I am on Amazon today to see what else Gayle Roper has written that I can get my hands on quickly. Winter Winds is my favorite of the four because I was captured by the idea of a Pastor trying his very best to serve God while caught in a secret marriage and separation he had no control over. What would this do to your congregation? One of the main themes of this book is the need to clear up miscommunication and seek out people who are offended with us to determine what the problem is so that forgiveness can be offered and relationships can be restored. While these books may not qualify as great literature, they are a great read. The plots have enough twists and turns to keep you in suspense. The setting is lovely, homey and comforting. The characters are real people trying their best to live a Christian life. I have found the endings sometimes rushed and a little too convenient, but all in all a great series. I will miss Seaside, but have enjoyed turning my friends on to this set.

Winter Winds a Winner,
This review is from: Winter Winds (Seaside Seasons #4) (Paperback)
Dori and Trev and the other characters in Winter Winds quickly became people I cared about--so much that I had to stay awake half the night to finish the book! Gail Roper has a winner in this book.

A Real Page Turner,

Winter Winds kept me awake late into the night anxious to find out how it would end-just like the other Seaside Seasons books (Spring Rain, Summer Shadows, and Autumn Dreams). Like Maureen, a character in the book who loved to read Christian novels, I lost myself in the story and was able to escape for awhile to the charming town of Seaside. A must read!

WINTER WINDS held me spellbound from the first page to the last word. The suspense and masterfully crafted plot will keep the reader running along the winter beaches of Seaside and urging the characters to look back over their shoulders. With crime frosting the air and misunderstandings from the past, Phil Trevelyan and Dori MacAllister have much to learn about love, God's forgiveness, and each other.
