5.0 out of 5 stars Froze me to my chair, March 25, 2005
By Iceman (Lake Stevens, WA) - See all my reviews
From my 8 year-old:
I felt excited to get a copy of "Winter of the Ice Wizard" by Mary Pope Osborn. This is one of the great stories of "The Magic Tree House" series. These books are about two little kids named Jack and Annie. They travel in a magic tree house.
In this story Jack and Annie have to find the Ice Wizard's eye. The wizard gives them a riddle and a rope with knots in it to help them on their quest. When someone unties a knot the sleigh goes faster. Two big white wolves chase our heros in the snow.
I really liked this book because the story had a lot of mystery and danger. I liked the author's characters, except the Norn sisters. They were too nice! If you want to find out what happens with the wolves at the end, rush to buy this book!

NB: this is the first time my son has ever read a book cover-to-cover!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars CONFESSIONS OF AN ADULT FAN, January 14, 2005
By Tim Janson (Michigan) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
I began reading the Magic Tree House series with my son several years ago. We'd take turns reading sections alod and it helped his reading as well as making him more confident to read aloud in class. He's 13 years old now and doesn't read these anymore but I confess to picking one up still here and there. I've been a fan of fantasy literature for 30 years and sometimes it's nice to take a bit of a break from the latest Robert Jordan behemoth and read something a little lighter both in length and in plot.

This is #32 in mary Pope Osbornes wonderfully imaginative Magic Tree House series. In this one, during Christmas Time Jack and Annie are summoned through the tree house by old friends Teddy and Kathleen. They emerge in a land that is frozen by magic by the Ice Wizard. But the wizard is no villian. He actually wanted Jack and Annie's help in finding Merlin and Morgan Le Fay who have disappeared. Thus begins a typical classic fantasy quest for our heroes.

Most adults can get through one of these in a couple of hours or so and kids in a couple of days. They are well-written, exciting and fun books for kids or adults looking for a small diversion. They really take me back to the days of reading C.S. Lewis and others when I was a kid. Enjoyable for all!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST ONE!!!!!!!!!!!, October 11, 2004
A Kid's Review
I'm 12, & this is the best of the Magic Tree House: Merlin Missions! It's when Jack, Annie, Teddy & Kathleen go to a freezing & bare land, where they meet the Ice Wizard (named in privious M.M.'s), who tells them to retreive his missing eye. Jack & Annie use a sleigh to "sail" across the winter wonderland, they also meet three Norns, who warn them about a Frost Giant! What happens??? Read the book!!!

With the cute addition of tales from places like Scandinavia, which tell of mythical tales, this concudes this set of Merlin Missions. Next in the series, Jack & Annie's adventures will have MAGIC and (Yay!) HISTORY in the stories!!! Mary Pope Osborne...KEEP ON WRITING! Highly reccomened to anyone...Along with the rest of the series (YES: all 32 of them!!) & the wonderful Research Guides: The Facts Behind the Fiction!

Happy Reading, Everyone!!!!!
