Searching for truth.

In the second book of Winter’s Saga we meet Creed Young. He’s a metahuman, like Meg, Alik and Evan Winter, but unlike the Winter children, Creed wasn’t rescued by a goodhearted doctor from the experiments and traumas at the hands of the evil Dr. Williams. No, Creed wasn’t that lucky. Instead, he was raised along with hundreds of other metasoldiers in a militant compound to be a lethal, bloodthirsty assassin. His first assignment: To kill the thief, Margo Winter, who stole three children from Dr. Williams’ institute twelve years ago, and return those stolen assets.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Sequel December 12, 2011
By Annie
Format:Kindle Edition
"Winter's Storm" grabs your attention and doesn't let go, becoming impossible to put down once you've started.

I'd already fallen in love with the characters from "Winter's Awakening," and the second book in the series doesn't disappoint. We are introduced to Creed Young, a metahuman who was raised under the auspices of the evil Dr. Williams, along with hundreds of other metasoldiers in a training camp called The Facility.

Threatened with death for failing to kill his own brother in a visceral opening battle scene, Creed accepts his first assignment as a meta-assassin: to kill Margo Winter and kidnap Meg, Alik and Evan - those wonderful characters from the first book whom we deeply care about. Creed has not only been bred to kill, he has been lied to and believes he's performing a good deed by returning the children to Dr. Williams, who wants them because they contain the original meta-DNA.

Now Meg, Alik and Evan must rise to the occasion and deal with tragedy and adversity, "evolution" and romance. The dialogue is consistently terrific. The conflict is deadly serious, a perilous game of survival and a struggle for the truth.

It's also a struggle for Creed's soul, and there is no room for error. He is smart and sensitive, and although he suffers from brainwashing, he doesn't want to become like his cruel brother. As the story progresses, we see a remarkable transformation as Creed wrestles with the virtues of honesty and struggles to become the type of individual he can respect, while at the same time being torn by conflicting allegiances.

Once again, the Winter children are called upon to summon their inner strength to defeat the malevolent Dr. Williams with the help of Margo's patient teachings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great story in The Winter's saga December 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Once again this author has produced a top notch story to follow on from the first book in The Winter's Saga. This second book has a great plot and well defined characters and with the action packed into every chapter it's hard to put down once you start reading.

The new characters in the story strike a chord immediately and you know the first time you meet Creed Young that he is going to be special and important, and he certainly does not disappoint. The evil Dr. Williams is dripping with trickery and a perfect foil for Creed who is lovable and yet oozing danger.

The description of the gladiatorial type fights, attacks and rescue missions are just right. The author must have put in a lot of research to add to the fantasy element of her book because the medical and military action is very believable and knowledgeable.

There is adventure, suspense, action, danger, compassion, humanity and fledgling romance in this excellent book. Highly recommended as a compelling and entertaining book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Sequel - but a bit of a warning September 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The 2nd book in the Winter's Saga series is a decent one. And, it follows on from the first book from where it left off. Overall, I like the evolution of the characters & those new to the story didn't detract. What I did find a bit unsettling was the introduction of the Christian overtones mid-way thru to the end of the book. I don't mind it when characters tell each other to pray for a good outcome or reference prayer in times of stress or danger, however this went slightly beyond that and introduced an entire religious undertone that was missing from the first book. It didn't keep me from finishing the book or from planning to finish the series, however I did find it detracting from the story and felt a bit deceived. If I want to read Christian fiction, I'll intentionally purchase it...please don't sneak it into a series mid-way thru.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series November 19, 2011
By Franz
Format:Kindle Edition
Many new authors have penned a great first book and then never matched that level again. A few authors have managed to write a second book that matched their first. Fewer still have written a second book that exceeds the first. Karen Luellen is one of these. I was instantly intrigued by her first book "Winter's Awakening". Using snappy dialogue, she brought her characters to life. By the end of her tale, I felt that I knew 15 year old Meg and had seen the world through her eyes. Meg was the star of the first book

In "Winter's Storm", the author gives Meg's brothers, 14 year old Alik, and 12 year old Evan a chance to shine. Through their words and actions the boys take life and the scenes come alive as they are forced to challenge a greater threat than the group met in the first novel, only this time, without the help of Meg. In this book we also meet Creed a new and interesting metahuman torn between what he has been taught and what he knows is right. Along with the tension of being stalked by the most relentless hunters in the world, we are left wondering which side Creed will be on when the final battle comes.

Tension starts with page one of this book and does not relent until the final chapter. With "Winter's Storm", Karen Luellen has cranked up her series a notch higher. Be prepared to spend a few sleepless nights glued to these pages. Once again I find myself impatiently asking when the next book will be available.

More About the Author

I grew up the only girl in the middle of two brothers. I adored both in their own ways, but never really fit into their worlds. Like my characters Alik and Evan, the boys were very different.

If I wanted a playmate, I had to gear up to go dirt-clod fighting, be the losing team of (broken) green army guys or brave the flimsy bicycle ramp my older brother was focused on.

Either that, or plan to help erect intricate Lego architecture while hearing the mathematical algorithms and possible big-bang theories of what happened to dinosaurs from my little brother.

Needless to say, I suffered a lot of skinned-up knees, elbows and even scraped off an eyebrow or two trying to keep up with the older brother and probably still have a Lego embeded into my thigh from sitting on the floor surrounded by the teeny-tiny pieces in my little brother's realm. (Oh, and did I mention I hate math?)

Often by myself, recuperating from my brothers' attentions, I created entire worlds of make-believe and adventure with my stuffed animals and books in my bedroom. Hours of storytelling, personally made sound effects and character voices entertained me to the point of utter happy distraction. Hindsight shows me, I've been a storyteller all my life.

Thanks to my brothers, I have a lot of stories to tell. I love you Jeremy and Field. You're the best brothers a girl could have--even if you did scar me for life more than once.

I love hearing from my readers, so feel free to visit me!

PS: Winter's Scars: The Forsaken, the fifth book in Winter's Saga, was just launched! I truly hope you enjoy it! Winter's Legacy, the sixth and final book in the series, is scheduled for release October 2013.
