Review

Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 09-DEC-09, Volume 302, Issue 22, Paulette Mehta, MD, MPH, Departments of Hematology/Oncology, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System -- "This is the 12th and most complete iteration of Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology, first published in 1942 by Maxwell Meyer Wintrobe, a leading hematologist at that time. In the years since, the book has been updated, the science elaborated, and the number of editors expanded. Yet subsequent editions have retained the strength of the first edition...The current editorial team consists of the 5 experts who edited the previous edition, along with 2 new editors. All are experts in pediatric or adult hematology/hematopathology, and all are located in North America. More than 150 author-experts have contributed. "The book is encyclopedic in its coverage of biology and pathophysiology as well as of clinical practice. It is one of the largest hematology textbooks, comprising 2 volumes totaling 2606 pages. It offers an exhaustive panorama of diagrams, figures, standard and electron micrographs, algorithms, schemas, and protocols-all in color... "Chapters on hematologic malignancies are up to date and include new and potential future treatments. Treatment regimens are schematized and compared and contrasted with each other. For example, the protocols for leukemia are shown in parallel using color-coded blocks, making for easy and comparison of different regimens and helping clinicians to design their own protocols as needed based on benefits and toxicities. Juxtaposition of chromosome and genomic features with hematologic clinical features and prognoses are helpful for scientists and clinicians alike. The book is current and provides descriptions of novel agents and of emerging treatments in the pipeline. All chapters are consistent in style, format, and referencing. Figures abound-there are 1 to 5 figures per page, intermixed with the text. Tables are uniform in style throughout. "The book is accompanied by an electronic edition, also in full color, providing the complete text and all of the figures, schemas, and tables. The electronic content is fully searchable by topic, citation, author, or keyword. The tables and figures are useful for reviewing a chapter or presenting material to peers. Readers will find little information about geriatric hematology or stem cell transplantation; however, specialized textbooks are available in each of those topics. What readers of Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology will find is a comprehensive, encyclopedic, accurate, and authoritative review of classic hematology that exquisitely intertwines basic molecular biology with the clinical diagnosis and treatment of disease."-Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

This review is from: Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology, 10th Edition (2 volume set) (Hardcover)
A comprehensive text of practical clinical hematology. Clearly and concisely written for use as a reference or 'at the bench.' One of the most useful materials in the Hematology laboratory.

This review is from: Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology, 10th Edition (2 volume set) (Hardcover)
This book is written primarily for the laboratory, and the haematologist. In that area it is excellent, for clinical treatment, williams or other books are better. But for the laboratoru I would reccomend this book, as I have this and several of the previous editions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology, 2 volume set, August 13, 2000

This review is from: Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology, 10th Edition (2 volume set) (Hardcover)
Although this is an excellent textbook for medical students and hematology fellows who need to learn more about certain topics and diseases, it offers limited assistance to the clinician who has to work backwards from lab results and symptoms in search of diseases. It covers the molecular biology of hematology in great detail and also discusses some of the treatment options. It is a great book if you are doing a paper on a hematologic topic. There are also chapters on the new techniques used in labs and the differences in these techniques. On the other hand, if you are looking at abnormal results on a CBC, this book may not offer much help.
