Product Description

GameSpot Review

It's time to bow down. With new tracks, weapons, and ships, and improved graphics, Wipeout XL is one of the top second generation titles for the Playstation this quarter. Wipeout XL has six all-new tracks and two hidden bonus tracks. There are fifteen ships, seven more than the original game. Each ship's strengths and weaknesses appear right on screen: top speed, turning ability, shield level, energy level, thrust, and aerodynamics. Wipeout XL's turning has been fine tuned, making it much tighter, yielding superior control and "road hugging." The weapons in the original Wipeout slowed the opponent down but yielded little satisfaction. In the sequel, it is possible to completely eliminate a weak opponent from the race. The earthquake weapon is unspeakably awesome. The graphics in Wipeout XL show the benefits of a year's efforts. The tracks are more detailed, with parrots flying through the lush vegetation of the South American track and monorails cruising along beside the hovercars. The background visuals are elaborate to the point of distraction. The weapons are visually spectacular, and seeing the light trails behind the hovercars is just plain cool. The sound effects are an improvement over those in the original, offering sonic details of everything from the laying of mines, to the explosion of a direct missile hit. The music soundtrack features a mix of techno and ambient house tracks that perfectly matches the pace of the game. The artificial intelligence has been tweaked up a few notches and will aggressively attempt to eliminate players right from the start. Wipeout XL is linkable, providing head-to-head racing action for two Playstations. Wipeout fans, this is a must buy. For those of you who have lived under a rock for the past year, get with it and reach for XL.--Tom Ham--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. 5.0 out of 5 stars The reason why I bought a Playstation, November 5, 2002
By
This review is from: WipeOut (Video Game)
I remember way back when the Playstation first came out, a friend of mine only had a demo of this game because the actual game wasn't going to come out for a few months. The demo featured one ship on the first track for one lap, and you had to wait for it to load every time. I must have played it a million times. I actually got to the point where I could get in third place on the first lap.

Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, I have probably played more racing games in my life than any other kind of game. I have played pretty much every kind of racing game in existance, from Gran turismo and Rage racer on Playstation to Hydro Thunder and Star Wars Episode 1:Pod Racer on Dreamcast, fron Diddy Kong on N64 to F-Zero and Mario Kart on Super Nintendo. And I am here to tell you that this one of the best racing games ever made, not just on Playstation, but on any system.

First, there is the graphics. Yes, they have draw-in, yes, they are low-res compared to most games today. But you know what, these graphics are better than those found in most games made today. How can that be? Simply because the graphics have what is missing from so many other games, STYLE. And let's not forget that each track in the game looks VASTLY different in Raptor League from how it looks in Venom League (playing at a different time of day means completely different lighting, and the lighting looks amazing). Despite it's age, this is a BEAUTIFUL game. From the Martian Red Sky to the Far-North Crystal Course, this game is wonderful to watch.

Then, there is the control. Some have complained about the control, saying it feels too "floaty". But you know what? It's a hovercraft. It's supposed to feel that way. Once you get the hang of it, you grow to love it. It took me a long, long, time to be able to play this game in first-person mode. Every time you hit the wall, the camera goes sideways, disorienting you. But once you get used to controlling the hovercraft in first-person mode, you feel like you've attained a new level of racing skill, and the game becomes that much more fun.

Sound in this game is awesome. Your craft has a cool engine sound, and the voice telling you you've about to get hit by a missile is classic. But what really blows my mind is the soundtrack. It is my favorite game soundtrack of all time. I copied the whole thing off of the game and burned it onto a cd, because it's so great. And when I first ripped it off the cd onto my hard drive, people were downloading the tracks like crazy. Imagine that.

The thing which seperates a great game from a good one is replay value. This game has replay value like you wouldn't believe. I've owned it for years. Yet, every once in a while I simply must go for a spin down one of the tracks. The music, the graphics, the controls...Pefect. This game is a work of art. The best thing to every come from Psygnosis, and in my opinion, the best game in the series. If you love racing games, you'll buy this one and guard it with you life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anti-Gravity Racing at its finest, May 23, 2000

Absolutely amazing rush. This was the game that caused me to buy my playstation 3 years ago. Today it is still one of my top 3 favorites. The combination of screaming graphics, excellent soundtrack, and the techno futuristic style of the whole thing work perfectly together to give the player an incredibly sense of speed and realistic competition. This is a very difficult game to master. It took me many many hours to make it through all the tracks. It can be a bit frustrating until you get the hang of the subtle movements required to successfully control the craft. If you like intense speed and a real sense of competition, you cant go wrong with this one.

Thats right.I remember on the PSX' release this was the game to have.I got it along with my new PSX and I must have spent the whole damn night on it.Today around 6yrs later it HAS aged but incredibly not by much. The graphics are still amazing and bright esp the Japanese track and the soundtrack, while not my type of music is still excellent as far as techno goes with proffessional exclusive tracks and musicians. This also would have to be by far the hardest of the series due to instant stopping if bumping walls. The tracks are amazing, with some bettering the later versions.I say buy it because its real cheap but if you have the newer ones you probably wont play it much due to the amount of time needed to excel at it.
