5.0 out of 5 stars The reason why I bought a Playstation
I remember way back when the Playstation first came out, a friend of mine only had a demo of this game because the actual game wasn't going to come out for a few months. The demo featured one ship on the first track for one lap, and you had to wait for it to load every time. I must have played it a million times. I actually got to the point where I could get in third...

I remember way back when the Playstation first came out, a friend of mine only had a demo of this game because the actual game wasn't going to come out for a few months. The demo featured one ship on the first track for one lap, and you had to wait for it to load every time. I must have played it a million times. I actually got to the point where I could get in third place on the first lap.

Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, I have probably played more racing games in my life than any other kind of game. I have played pretty much every kind of racing game in existance, from Gran turismo and Rage racer on Playstation to Hydro Thunder and Star Wars Episode 1:Pod Racer on Dreamcast, fron Diddy Kong on N64 to F-Zero and Mario Kart on Super Nintendo. And I am here to tell you that this one of the best racing games ever made, not just on Playstation, but on any system.

First, there is the graphics. Yes, they have draw-in, yes, they are low-res compared to most games today. But you know what, these graphics are better than those found in most games made today. How can that be? Simply because the graphics have what is missing from so many other games, STYLE. And let's not forget that each track in the game looks VASTLY different in Raptor League from how it looks in Venom League (playing at a different time of day means completely different lighting, and the lighting looks amazing). Despite it's age, this is a BEAUTIFUL game. From the Martian Red Sky to the Far-North Crystal Course, this game is wonderful to watch.

Then, there is the control. Some have complained about the control, saying it feels too "floaty". But you know what? It's a hovercraft. It's supposed to feel that way. Once you get the hang of it, you grow to love it. It took me a long, long, time to be able to play this game in first-person mode. Every time you hit the wall, the camera goes sideways, disorienting you. But once you get used to controlling the hovercraft in first-person mode, you feel like you've attained a new level of racing skill, and the game becomes that much more fun.

Sound in this game is awesome. Your craft has a cool engine sound, and the voice telling you you've about to get hit by a missile is classic. But what really blows my mind is the soundtrack. It is my favorite game soundtrack of all time. I copied the whole thing off of the game and burned it onto a cd, because it's so great. And when I first ripped it off the cd onto my hard drive, people were downloading the tracks like crazy. Imagine that.

The thing which seperates a great game from a good one is replay value. This game has replay value like you wouldn't believe. I've owned it for years. Yet, every once in a while I simply must go for a spin down one of the tracks. The music, the graphics, the controls...Pefect. This game is a work of art. The best thing to every come from Psygnosis, and in my opinion, the best game in the series. If you love racing games, you'll buy this one and guard it with you life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anti-Gravity Racing at its finest, May 23, 2000

Absolutely amazing rush. This was the game that caused me to buy my playstation 3 years ago. Today it is still one of my top 3 favorites. The combination of screaming graphics, excellent soundtrack, and the techno futuristic style of the whole thing work perfectly together to give the player an incredibly sense of speed and realistic competition. This is a very difficult game to master. It took me many many hours to make it through all the tracks. It can be a bit frustrating until you get the hang of the subtle movements required to successfully control the craft. If you like intense speed and a real sense of competition, you cant go wrong with this one.

So many people have given detailed, in depth reviews of this game already. Refer to theirs if that's what you're looking for. This is more of a cliff notes version. Playing this game on a big (possibly projection) screen in first person view is incredibly immersing. The soundtrack is amazing if you're a fan of electronica/ambient music. It fits perfectly with the action.

This may very well be my favorite racer ever. Wipeout XL is neck & neck with it. This original version may get the nod purely due to nostalgia. Go ahead and throw both of them in your cart.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Retrospective Review, March 21, 2011

I grew up playing this game as a kid, so after buying this game in this day and age I really tried hard to like it. I really did, but I just couldn't.

I remember playing this on DOS with the joystick. The graphics are a little better then I remembered it and the playstation control is a lot easier to handle than a joystick. The level design is also very retro and original. You simply don't get such dark, dysptopianish, techno inspired level design like this anymore. Speaking of techno, the soundtrack allthough very short is simply the best soundtrack of the entire Wipeout franchise. Messhja being the best song in my opinion.

Now where this game sadly suffers is the gameplay.

Anti-Grav racing has gotten faster as time moves on and as a result the original Wipeout simply hasn't aged that well. You simply move too slow in this game. So slow that your thumb will actually start to feel sore after two races. I can't even play this game with the X button as the thrust anymore. I have to use the Triangle button, but that is not even the worst aspect of this game. The worst is that fact that your ship loses all of its speed every single time you miss a turn or bump into an enemy ship and that's another problem. Nothing is more annoying in this game then having to pass another ship and have that ship bump into you slowing you down. A more minor issue I have with this game is all the weapon effects just look boring and uninspired looking. If I'm shooting rockets or missles I want to see a lot more than just a small cloud of dust. I want to see some sorta projectile and explosion.

Overall I only recemend playing this game if you never experienced the later Wipeouts especially Wipeout Fusion. Once you play Fusion this game becomes pretty much unplayable.

The reason I'm still getting PSX games is nostalgia but also because there are few games these days that match the awesomeness of the wipeout franchise. Having played this on both PSX, PSP and PS3 I must say the wipeout games never disappoint. The techno soundtracks are a good match for this type of racing game. If you are like me it will not matter if you get this or the more recent versions, it will be as fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Still Relevent, May 12, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: WipeOut (Video Game)
This is an old classic from back in the days of the original Playstation, even before the PS1 came out. Despite its age, the game is still very engaging and entertaining and is still a challenge to play but not to the point that it's frustrating. It can successfully be played on all three generations of Playstations without problems. The music is entertaining as well and you can listen to it on a standard CD player, one of the many perks of original Playstation games. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good time.
