3.0 out of 5 stars A nice sequel, but still not a good as the XL version
I bought this with eager anticipation and hopes of seeing something above and beyond the XL version. didn't really match my hopes, but still this is fun game, if you like the series its worth getting, but if you have to choose a good racer, get Wipeout XL first!

This game is remarkable. It features music from some of the most popular techno gurus around and was mixed by one of the greatest-DJ Sasha. The (hi-res!)graphics feature innovative and stunning designs by Designers Republic, and run both mind-bendingly fast and smoothly, with little pop-up. Though the difficulty levels are a bit quirky (beating the first round of tracks on EASY is a breeze, but when you hit NORMAL you can barely place) the cars and secret tracks more than make up for the difficulty of the later modes. This version also has the much-sought after 2 player simultanous mode absent from the other games. Overall, this game IS NOT for realistic racing fans, but for the rest of us who enjoy great graphics, control (the analog stick on the dual-shock works great), and music in a fantasy racing situation, Wipeout 3 is almost perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as if not better than Wipeout XL, November 25, 1999

This game is really great and by far the best racing game available. The Wipeout series is known for its innovation and high-res graphics and Wipeout 3 doesn't fail to please.

The game has a ton of features like single race, challange, eliminator, and the prototype tracks. There are many multiplayer options and you can have up to 4 players with a link cable (2 w/o). The soundtrack is as good as XL, but I was a bit disappointed that there was no Cold Storage in it. On the downside of this game, the difficulty between vector and venom classes is too different. Vector is very easy and venom is hard, there's no medium. Once you get past that though this game is quirk free.

So buy W3 and try to find Wipeout XL (which is out of print).

Though some will tell you that XL is the best, XL doesn't have analog support. And besides, the tracks in 3 are just hard enough. And the female voice of your ship's computer is helpful, while not being irritating. The music is great, and like some PSone games, you can drop it into your computer and rip it. Chemical Brothers - Under the Influence is probably my favorite song on this.

I'd reccomend this over Wipeout Fusion, because Fusion didn't really get the controls down 100% and the tracks aren't well balanced. Wipeout 3 is about as fast and hectic as you can get.

When I think of this game, in my head I hear the female computer voice say "Force wall." :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the king, January 21, 2002
This review is from: Wipeout 3 (Video Game)
This may not be a gigantic leap over the near-flawless Wipeout XL, but as they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. In fact, with the addition of Challenge modes, as well as the return of the Tournament mode, Wipeout 3 is the most complete game of the 3. Graphics are incredibly smooth and fast, as usual, with little to none of that background "pop-in" that plagued the first two. The ships look a little like Lego though. Wipeout's claim to fame (other than vomit-inducing speed) has always been its pulsing soundtrack, and this time around, it can be the best of the 3 (Chemical Brothers' Influence and Sasha's Xpander) but it can also be the worst (an uncharacteristically weak tune from Orbital and the rest of Sasha's contributions). No fear, though, because the gameplay has been relatively untouched. The biggest new feature is the hyper-thrust. The R1 button sacrifices shield energy for a little extra speed, which minimizes the loss of speed from hitting the wall (believe me, you WILL hit the wall). There are some new weapons, including the force wall and energy drain, but no turbo boost(sob...). It's also important to mention that combat plays a much larger role in this outing. It can mean the difference between 1st and 6th. I haven't stuck with it for exceptionally long, but I've noticed that it is much harder to win in this game, except on Vector (which isn't how you should be playing anyway). I find that a good thing though. I'm now at the point where I'm winning the Venom circuits, but still struggling to win gold with the Rapier Class. I also like the idea that you start with 4 tracks and 4 ships, but if you win enough races, you'll end up with 8 tracks (check out the Manor Top) and 8 ships (Icaras is a treat). It can be frustrating finishing 4th all the time, but the reward of finally winning is worth the effort. If you're a fan of the Wipeout series (you probably are if you're reading this) then Wipeout 3 is just as good as any other. If Wipeout has never really appealed to you, then you should save your money this time around too (for a shrink).

Wipeout 3 or Wip3out, as you like, is the top of this series. Scenaries are superb, reallistic and impressive. You can play in three view modes (cockpit added), any of them results in awesome experiences. Smooth, simply smooth, is what better describe the sensations and feelings when playing. Venom, Vector, Rapier... Feisar, Auricom, Piranha... the name you want, the pleasure is total! I'm a GREAT fan of Wipeout 2 but, sure, it will remains in the jewel case after this release. No more popping, no more lost polygons, no more weird colours... no Red Bull at all! True 3D, speed, action, real weapons, all that you want in a FAST game. Chase the opponents in one of five play modes... Languages? No problem: english, german, portuguese, italian, french, spanish... Saying 'no significant improves' is too simply, silly almost, I promise! The soundtrack is lacking the atmosphere created by Photek, Fluke, Prodigy, Cold Storage or Chemical Brothers in WO2, but is Ok. Playing for a month will be a good way to agree with.

** IF YOU WANT TO PLAY A GAME, PLAY WIPEOUT 3 **

5.0 out of 5 stars Just for the Music, February 14, 2004

I'd buy this game just for the music. The game can also be played in normal CD players if you just want to listen to the soundtrack.

This game has some of the best graphics that I've seen for the PSX. It levels are very colorful and filled with futurous scenery. The many powerups and weapons add to the fun in this game. Control is a little hard when you first start playing, but it is easy to get used to (The craft slide a bit when you are turning). There are only 8 ships to choose from and some of them aren't very good. More tracks wouldn't hurt either. This game is a good game and you should buy it.

I purchased this game because I am a Wipeout fan. I enjoyed the first, the second was great, but my first reaction to the third was less than enthusiastic. I was looking for another XL. The soundtrack is just as good as XL if not better, especially song #14. The sound effects aren't as good and the weapons seems less impressive. BUT, after I played this game more and more I began to enjoy it. The tracks are much smoother than any other Wipeout game and some of the extra features really have some cool things to do. I listen to the music all the time, and I am still trying to master the rapier class tracks. Enjoy this game, if you have the heart for it and the speed in your fingers, you will like it. Overall, a great sequel. Can't wait to see what PS2 will provide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A close to perfect the franchise has come to, May 12, 2005

Wipeout 3 was a great way to get into the franchise because it has the best of what the previous games offered plus a little more. The graphics got some serious update since Wipeout 2 and the gameplay is a lot smoother and faster. Add to that a killer soundtrack and some nice little extras and this game is an obvious choice for any arcade racing fan.

First of all the racing is just plain fun. Frame rate is very smooth and the tracks are varied and challenging. If you're not familiar with Wipeout at all then think of it as a sci-fi racing game. You're racing on an anti-gravity sled thingy that's not only built for speed but armed to take out your opponents the dirty way (by either slowing them down with a land mine or completely trashing their vehicle with a guided missile). Just keep in mind the other racers can do the same. So you have a combination of racing and a little tactical combat as well.

There are some tweaks and improvements from the last games, but the one I'm going to focus on is the instant replay. This is a very cool feature that lets you see the race you just finished from the cameraman's point of view. You see yourself racing past the crowds and screaming around curves (or crashing against the side rails depending on your performance) as if you were watching the race on tv. Neat feature.

The soundtrack is the best of the series (with Wipeout Fusion a close second). Many people prefer Wipeout 2's soundtrack because it has different and eclectic styles of electronica. To me, however, W3 has all the songs built for speed. You get a who's who of artists like Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Underworld, Propellerheads, DJ Sasha and more. For nothing else get this game for the cool soundtrack.

Considering the price of the game today you would be crazy not to buy it, even for just the soundtrack (which you can rip from the game CD). I have played it on my PS2 with no problems and the gameplay still keeps me coming back. Arcade race fans... this game is a winner.

Although this game has exceptional graphics, (which is not what a racing game is all about) the controls are PERFECT no matter what kind of controller you have, and it's just a lot of fun! I would definetely try it out (then recommend it to a friend)!
