Product Description

GameSpot Review

It's time to bow down. With new tracks, weapons, and ships, and improved graphics, Wipeout XL is one of the top second generation titles for the Playstation this quarter. Wipeout XL has six all-new tracks and two hidden bonus tracks. There are fifteen ships, seven more than the original game. Each ship's strengths and weaknesses appear right on screen: top speed, turning ability, shield level, energy level, thrust, and aerodynamics. Wipeout XL's turning has been fine tuned, making it much tighter, yielding superior control and "road hugging." The weapons in the original Wipeout slowed the opponent down but yielded little satisfaction. In the sequel, it is possible to completely eliminate a weak opponent from the race. The earthquake weapon is unspeakably awesome. The graphics in Wipeout XL show the benefits of a year's efforts. The tracks are more detailed, with parrots flying through the lush vegetation of the South American track and monorails cruising along beside the hovercars. The background visuals are elaborate to the point of distraction. The weapons are visually spectacular, and seeing the light trails behind the hovercars is just plain cool. The sound effects are an improvement over those in the original, offering sonic details of everything from the laying of mines, to the explosion of a direct missile hit. The music soundtrack features a mix of techno and ambient house tracks that perfectly matches the pace of the game. The artificial intelligence has been tweaked up a few notches and will aggressively attempt to eliminate players right from the start. Wipeout XL is linkable, providing head-to-head racing action for two Playstations. Wipeout fans, this is a must buy. For those of you who have lived under a rock for the past year, get with it and reach for XL.--Tom Ham--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. 5.0 out of 5 stars The best video game ever made, November 5, 2001
This review is from: Wipeout XL (Video Game)
Computer games have come a long way since Atari, and WipeoutXL proves it. Conceptually, this is the coolest, most creative game I've ever seen. The whole "anti-gravity" racing scenario is the greatest idea I've seen for a game in a long time. The graphics are great, and the game itself is sheer FUN. The soundtrack is full of great electronic tunes...very fitting. This is the only video game I've ever played that actually put chills up my spine. If it does that, then it must be good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wipeout Reloaded, April 4, 2003

This review is from: Wipeout XL (Video Game)
I consider the original Wipeout for Sony Playstation to be the finest fururitic racer ever (yes, I like it better than any incarnation of F-Zero). From the gorgeous visuals and multiple lighting scenes for every level (Vemom and Rapter Classes), to the awesome, awesome, AWESOME soundtrack (my favorite soundtrack of any racing ever), Wipeout was perfect. But many people don't agree with me. They prefer Wipeout's sequel, Wipeout XL. It's easy to see why.

Wipeout XL takes what everyone loved about the original and upped it a notch. The graphics are higher Resolution, the music is more upbeat, the weapons are more lethal. But perhaps the greatest reason to play it is that it's REALY FAST. There is simply no experience on earth like playing Wipeout XL on Phantom Class (the fastest class) with the hidden class of ship (unforetunately it loses weapons in exchange for maxed-out stats).

When you play this game in this configuration, it truly is sublime. Weapons are fired at you, but you outrun them. You're bouncing off the wall like crazy, but going so fast it feels like you've got the speed burst weapon on continuous fire. It's easy to see what makes this game so great. It's a great concept executed flawlessly. You have great art direction, great controls, great gameplay, and great music. At a pace so fast it should carry a warning label.

If you love racing games, and especially if you love Wipeout, you'll HAVE to buy this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you handle it?, October 27, 2000

Soon as I heard Prodigy's Firestarter I knew it was on. This game is fast, real fast. Wipeout XL may not be in high res like Wipeout 3 but it's got the best gameplay, courses, and music of the series. The control is not as tight as Wipeout 3 and the learning steep is alot better. It's easy at first, but get's harder, faster, and more fun the more you race. Unlock a special racing team and new courses if you can beat the challenge. Only complaints I have about this stellar game is no Dual Shock support, which means no analog or rumble feature, and not in high res. The graphics are still really great though.
