I looked at quite a few other bluetooth speakers out there before finally settling on this righteous thingamajigin.
And Im glad that I did for the reasons to follow.

Durable: I havent dropped it but it has endured all the bumps and shocks that come with riding on the dashboard of a landscaping truck. (those little rubber feet grip quite well!) And in the side pocket of a landscapers cargo pants << Think sweat mixed with ridiculous heat then add bumping up and down.

Battery life: Its great for my uses the thing goes for about 4 days before needing a charge. Though I use it mostly for audible books rather than rocknroll. (It has more life left even then but I like to play it safe) I'd say the up to 15 hr life is truthful.

Sound: Im not an audio expert but the books come out crisp! And loud enough to be heard with two windows down doing 65 on the freeway in a truck that jumps ten feet in the air with every pothole. Even more so when you're pruning/weeding/leaf raking.

Portability: It fits most anywhere and it rides comfortably in a decent sized thigh pocket.

Accessability: I have it paired with my Iphone 4s and I can be about 20ft away and still have steady sound. Also it can easily be paused, the volume adjusted, played etc. quickly. Which is very important if you dont want to annoy the boss!

The charging feature is a nice plus but I havent used it extensively... Yet.

After ruining my former bluetooth speaker by using it one too many times in a steamy bathroom, it was obvious that the next one had to be water resistant. The BRV-1 wasn't my first choice. I actually bought the TDK Life on Record A33 Wireless Weatherproof Speaker The sound on the TDK is amazing for a mid-priced bluetooth speaker. But, it kept loosing connectivity with the iPod touch. The other things I didn't like about the TDK were the weight & shape. That speaker really needs a handle. The playtime wasn't very long either - under 6 hours.

The BRV-1 is completely different. It's an ugly/cute little thing. Lightweight (although hefty considering its size). It feels much more rugged. I love the lanyard - you can carry the speaker with it, or hang the speaker from the showerhead. The first music I played on the BRV-1 was some Sinatra big-band. It sounded very tiny. But, after the EQ setting on the iPod was adjusted the sound was much improved. I've never messed with the setting before, but it did make a difference. The sound is darn good - better than I expected from a speaker this size.

Another thing I like about the BRV-1 is that charging is via a standard micro-USB cable. It comes with a USB cable. But, at this point most folks have a bunch of micro-USB power cords from cell phones, Kindles, etc. My Kindle charger is charging the BRV-1 just fine. The A33, on the other hand, has to be charged via the large power cord supplied by TDK.

Establishing a bluetooth connection with the BRV-1 was easy. There hasn't been any issue with it dropping the connection (used with an iPad 3, iPod touch 3, and iPod touch 5).

The Braven BRV-1 is a combination of rugged good looks and a functional speaker.... kinda like this reviewer (except for the functional speaker part!). The Braven BRV-1 is great for an activity that expose you and your listeners to water or being dropped. The speaker is water resistant per IPX5 which means it can be exposed to rain or water jets (or a shower) without fear of it getting damaged.

The speaker has solid sound performance, but there are other bluetooth speakers that louder. However (and as seen in the video) the speakers that are louder seem to be tuned on the higher end of the frequencies - which definitely makes them louder but also a more tinny type of sound. So there is a trade off the Braven may sacrifice a bit of sound volume but it makes it up by having a more rounded overall frequency response.

Notes-

- Dual 3W speakers (6 watts total) with a bottom port for bass resonance. I mentioned that the sound performance relative to the other speakers featured in the video - but on its own it does a have a good clean sound. The bass is not overly deep (because of the size of the speakers drivers), but it is enough to round out the rrequency response. The additional bass works it way into the mid-ranges so the Braven BRV-1 certainly does not sound "tinny"

- Can be used as an external 1400mAh battery pack.

- Water Resistant per IPX5 which means that it is water resistant but not completely water proof (it can not be submerged)

- Can be used as speakerphone - I rarely use bluetooth speakers as a speakerphone, but if you have the need it will work.

I actually bought and compared this to the EcoXGear EcoXBT. So many owners of that speaker love it because it's so loud. I'm a musician, an acoustic musician at that. These speakers are both 6 watts. The EcoxGear is much louder, but I cant stand how tinny and high-heavy the sound is. It might be the lack of bass. The braven is just so delightful. It's much louder than you expect and you have a passive speaker that pushes out an impressive amount of bass from the bottom of the speaker. When you turn it off, you hear the range of its bass with its shut off noise.

As far as the ruggedness, my little 21 month old carries this all over the parking lot. He loves how light it is, especially compared to the EcoxGear, and has dropped it more than once without any problems.

Another thing that this guy has over the compared EcoxGear is that it's buttons are programmed the right way. You have to hold the Power button to switch the device on and off. This essential for a rugged speaker that's expected to keep working after a fall. If you "tap" the volume buttons up or down, you get an increase or decrease in volume. If you hold a volume button down, it performs either a skip (volume +) or review (volume -).

One last thing this speaker has over the EcoxGear is that you can charge your phone (1amp) off of the USB port in the back. This is essential, in my opinion.
