Good breadth of subject, depth is lacking, lot of errors,
By A Student (Palo Alto) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wireless Communications (Hardcover)
The book gives a fairly good breadth of subject, but is lacking in depth, and also does not give good intuitive sense of the subject. The book contains lot of typos and numerical errors that need to be addressed.
The book seems more intent on giving a lot of formulas and wireless situations, instead of enabling the student to think independently, and giving the tools for the student to think and derive the answers to issues. The chapter on channel models for example gives a bunch of models for different fading conditions, but does not even clarify when the models apply, and how to apply them. After reading the chapter, I am not sure when each model applies and how to apply them.

Lots of Cheerleading, Limited Sport,

This review is from: Wireless Communications (Hardcover)
As one would expect, there's plenty of cut-and-paste terminology and mathematics from current academic engineering topics. So there's a lot of cheerleading. But missed is the opportunity to show in depth how useful theory (Signals & Systems, Control, you name it) can be in solving Wireless/Digital Communication problems. So she honestly failed to capture the actual sport of Communication theory (Wireless, Digital, or Otherwise).

Too many errors!,

I used this book for a graduate level wireless comm. class taught by the author herself. This book is rife with errors especially in the first few chapters. Things got so bad that I started questioning every result presented in the book that I could not immediately understand and prove, thinking that it might be incorrect. This book is not recommended for self study due to these numerous errors unless the reader is just browsing and wants a qualitative understanding. One observation is that the author sacrifices breadth for depth in her coverage of the material. A minor quibble is that the author misses opportunities to give simple proofs for "low hanging fruit" results and just keeps presenting page after page of results and formulae. These translate to missed opportunities to build intuition for the student. In summary this book while it tries to be comprehensive suffers severely from sloppiness and is not recommended.

Wonderful comprehensive overview,
By Totoro500 "totoro500" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wireless Communications (Hardcover)
Dr. Goldsmith has provided a work of art. The book presents material in a usable format that is ideal for both getting a grasp of the material, and delving into the areas that require a bit more technical detail. The material is intelligently organized and coherent. That said, this book is clearly intended for those who are in the field or who want to be; not those who just want to be able to talk about wireless communications at a party. As one who does practice in the field, I keep the book on hand as a reference.

An appreciation for comprehensive book,
By Jivesh Govil "JIVESH GOVIL" (Delhi, INDIA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wireless Communications (Hardcover)
The books presents a comprehensive description of wireless communication systems supported with gamut of examples from the world around us.
By focussing on design tradeoffs and issues, the author has provided an insightful view of the most fundamental principles of wireless system design. Hence, it is best for gradaute students. I came to this book while I was searching for analytical tools for wireless communications. The references provided are excellent, and have helped me to locate the information I wanted, with ease. Currently, I am developing my basics for gradute study in wireless communications. I hope that book fits into the realm of graduate study at all institutions. The author is highly leraned person and seems to have an excellent knowledge of the subject.

Brilliant book,
By Juan M. Romero-Jerez (Spain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wireless Communications (Hardcover)
In this book, the author merges her deep knowledge of the field of wireless communication with her passion of transmitting her knowledge to others. The evident didactic skills of the author are put into service to explain in a clear, profound and accurate way not only the fundamentals of wireless communication systems, but also some of the most recent development in the field, such as MIMO, adaptive modulation, equalization, multicarrier and ad hoc networks, in such a way that the reader will soon find himself immersed in the excitement of this up-to-date knowledge. The book also includes the information theory point of view of both single user and multiuser wireless networks, which are usually omitted in other textbooks in the field. Students pursuing a degree in electrical engineering will find in the first six chapters a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals in the subject, saving a lot of time, as very few books treat the fundamentals in such a clear and, at the same time, deep way. Students pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the area will find an indispensable reference. For practicing engineers, this book will provide the design tools of modern wireless networks. This book will shortly become a classic. It is simply, an excellent job.
