Product Description

The YX039-PCS-CEL dual-band outdoor signal antenna system allows your Wi-Ex cell phone signal booster to provide a larger area of improved indoor signal strength and improve indoor performance where weak outdoor cell signals exist. The antenna operates with signals in both the 850 MHz Cellular and the 1900 MHz PCS bands. The YX039-PCS-CEL dual-band antenna system consists of two directional panel antennas, one for the Cellular band (850 MHz) and one for the PCS band (1900 MHz). An antenna combiner is included to combine the signals from the two antennas into one coax for connection to the Wi-Ex Base Unit. Two 18-inch coaxial jumpers are included to connect each panel antenna to the Combiner. zBoost will increases signal for voice transmission, increases signal and speed of aircards, EDGE and 3G technology, uses patent-pending technologies to protect the carrier network . It is not compatible with Nextel/iDEN devices. zBoost has a 1 year manufacturer warranty. zBoost provides solutions for the 70% of cell phone owners experiencing problems with their cell phone service, including dropped calls, poor signal reception or dead zones. zBoost improves indoor cell phone signal by capturing and enhancing outside signal, then bringing it indoors.

The use of radio distribution equipment that enhances, extends or amplifies a wireless signal may be prohibited without the consent of the wireless carrier upon whose network such equipment will be used. You should consult with your carrier before purchasing such equipment to use with that carrier’s service.

Well worth the investment! August 27, 2010

I purchased the zBoost SOHO YX545 Dual Band Cell Phone Signal Booster for my home and it had very little improvement in signal from outside to inside with the antenna it came with. In consulting zBoost support it was recommended to get the YX039 Dual-Band Directional Outdoor Signal Antenna Upgrade. I went from no signal with maybe 1 bar on my cell before installing the YX039, to 5/all bars. It made all the difference in the world! I wish it came with a mount, however I made one very simply with 2ft piece of 1" PVC pipe and a 50cent PVC wall bracket from HomeDepot, to mount to side of house.

Vendor was quick to process and ship. I ordered on Tuesday and had it in-hand before weekend to install.

I installed the zBoost SOHO YX545 about 5 months ago and have had great luck with it using the default antenna. Unfortunately, about 3 weeks ago the signal pattern changed where I had the antenna installed and the signal strength in my house dropped to about 30% of what it had been. Keep in mind that the 30% signal strength was still better than it had been without the zBoost - but it's still a significant drop once you get used to '5 bars' throughout the house.

I guess I could have gone back to the roof and just adjusted the location of the exterior antenna again, but that didn't seem like a good long-term solution. I don't really want to be on my roof every 3-4 months moving this antenna around (and drilling new holes in my chimney every time).

My first instinct was to get an upgraded indoor antenna for the YX545 base station. Thankfully, I called and talked to the zBoost technical support people first and they said an upgraded indoor antenna wouldn't help; instead, they recommended this YX039 directional outdoor antenna.

After thinking about it some more, I realized this antenna makes perfect sense - one issue with the zBoost YX545 is that the indoor and outdoor antennas broadcast & receive on the same frequencies. This can cause feedback problems for the base station if the 2 antennas are positioned where they can 'talk' to each other. To resolve the feedback problem, the base station has to turn down its own broadcast strength, but that also reduces the amount of 'boost' you get in the house. Fortunately, a directional antenna is much less likely to pick up the signal from the base station - so the YX545 can broadcast at full strength.

Installing this directional antenna wasn't hard at all. First, I went to the roof with my Android phone and ran the free OpenSignal application. This app pointed me directly at the cell phone tower my phone was connecting too. It was easy to mount the antenna using a 1" PVC pipe as a mast and point it at the tower. My kids then took my cell phone inside and we did some fine tuning to get the signal in the house to the maximum strength possible (once again, using the OpenSignal application).

The one thing to remember is that the base station needs to be rebooted before doing any fine tuning. That will force it to increase its own broadcase strength once the directional antenna is installed. Before the reboot, this antenna didn't make much difference - so I'm glad I thought about rebooting before I got discouraged...

Now, the signal in our house is even better than it was with the original antenna. We get a great '5-bar' signal throughout our 2-story 3000 square foot house - and it doesn't fluctuate like it did with the original antenna. It's even better than the signal in the yard!

The best thing is that I no longer have to worry about the signal pattern changing on the roof since this antenna is directional, and pointed directly at the cell tower.

Overall, I highly recommend the zBoost YX545 signal booster. If you want to get an even better, and more reliable, signal boost from that base station - then I also highly recommend going with this directional antenna.

I've been reading the customer reviews on the YX039 and find that some customers aren't satisfied (i.e. it didn't work as promised) and I believe that these individuals judged the product prematurely without understanding the facts about RF and antenna theory. So, let me educate our potential future buyers of the YX039. (1) DO NOT use the cheap RG-6 mini cable that came with the booster as it is worthless. Go out and buy no more than 50ft of good quality RG-6 cable from somewhere else. I've used both and I can definitely tell the difference in signal strength within my house. 2) DO NOT use more than 50 ft of cable. Anymore than that will significantly reduce the signal coming from your antenna into your booster, which will result in less "bars" inside your home. 3) Mount the YX039 AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE. Remember - just like your cell phone, the antenna works off of "line-of-sight". If you live in a low-lying area and/or you are surrounded by trees, houses, and other obstructions, you are going to experience "less bars" than other people. The only way to counteract this is to mount your antenna as high as possible.

Here's about the easiest and most effective solution I could come up with on a small budget and it works great! One 10ft piece of 1 1/4" EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) from your local hardware store and a satellite dish mounting bracket. The bracket shouldn't be hard to find because people usually leave them behind when they move. I found six of them in my neighborhood. Using some good quality silicone adhesive (for waterproofing), mount the bracket ON your roof, not on the side like some people do. This method adds more stability for your antenna since it is going to be sticking up 10ft from your rooftop. Mount the YX039 on one end of the EMT and secure the other end inside the bracket. Aim your antenna in the direction of your nearest cell tower by using your Jedi force *or* having someone inside monitoring their phone for signal increase/decrease. Go slow with this adjustment process because your phone will be slow in updating. BTW - you can also D/L the free phone app OpenSignal which finds your nearest tower for you.

I should also note that I live in a "0 to 1" bar area and now get all bars inside my home with the YX039 antenna and the SOHO YX545. Hope this helps.
