Product Description

The YX023-PCS is an optional (outdoor) signal antenna upgrade for the YX500-PCS which provides additional signal strength in interior spaces and is used to increase the area of improved cell coverage. The antenna is recommended for areas with weak outdoor signals strength to provide peak system performance. The YX023-PCS antenna replaces the omni-directional signal antenna and provides 13 dBi of gain. All hardware is included to mount on masts up to 2 ½” diameter. I purchased and installed a YX500 PCS booster. While it made a difference, the stock omni-directional antenna didn't provide enough of a boost. Our phones would have a strong signal within 10 feet of the indoor antenna, but beyond that, the signal dropped off quickly. I purchased the YX023 directional antenna and tried aiming it toward the nearest tower. I was amazed with the difference it made -- my phone, which showed a maximum signal of 16 asu with the stock antenna, now had a signal as high as 28 asu. The zero to one bar areas in our house now show full bars on our phones.

Obviously this antenna will only help if you already have some outdoor reception. If you do though, you should be able to get great reception if you aim your antenna correctly. Aiming can be done with an expensive meter or with the help of an assistant. In my case, I displayed the signal strength on my Android phone, had someone watch the signal strength and call out the numbers on a walkie talkie while I turned the antenna on the roof.

I live in the center of a 2 mile dead zone for cell service, so I purchased a repeater for my house. The original uni-directional antenna for the YX500-PCS didn't quite do the job, so I ordered the directional antenna.

I've gone from no coverage to marginal with the combination, but signal strength in my area is still below what the manufacturer identifies as the minimum, so I really can't complain. Some tools to help optimize the alignment of the antenna would do a lot to make this more effective, which is why I am rating it lower than I might.

This antenna was not very effective in my case. A Yagi PCS antenna works much better.
