Book Description

December 17, 2001
Mark Beaulieu gives IT professionals the working understanding of wireless they need to begin designing wireless software and content effectively. Beaulieu begins by introducing the wireless Internet, its key concepts, and the trends, forces, organizations, and technologies shaping it -- including emerging technologies such as i-Mode, Bluetooth, HDR, SDMA, GPS, LBS, 802.11a. Next, you'll learn how to create -- and optimize -- wireless applications. You'll walk through building applications for a Web phone, handheld, pager, and voice portal. Beaulieu demonstrates how to construct messaging, browsing, interactive, and conversational voice portal applications, presenting application code and mobile content applicable to today's full range of hardware and wireless networks. Beaulieu then introduces the principles of wireless architecture, learning how to make key architectural decisions, and how to build back-end servers that support multiple wireless clients. A Resources and References section brings together valuable resources. For all wireless application developers, and for all IT and Web professionals planning or considering wireless applications.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote this book for software engineers and telecommunication professionals so they can build mobile wireless applications. Even if you flip through the pages, the key diagrams and illustrations teach the most important concepts. I really took the time to think about the global wireless situation and report for you by knocking on the doors of the smartest and most successful people I know doing wireless Internet work. Explanations, pictures, source code are at the core of wireless application development of the different wireless platforms. All the spectrum tables, wireless methodology diagrams, and server architecture are grounded in working experience.

I am profoundly excited by this moment in the software and telecommunications history and am glad my publisher has given the opportunity to share this knowledge and introduce you to the sources of this technology. At the threshold of a variety of "radio operating systems" software developers now have functions that have never been available on a PC. In the space of a cell phone, we have a device that can share messages, remotely control devices, run applications, and connect with voice portals. The book shows how each device and network operates to reach the Internet. The current wireless professional needs to know how to build the best mobile wireless applications and configure Internet servers and this book show you how. Understanding telecommunications and the computer Internet industry terms are essential to making 3G and wireless Enterprise technology work. Mobile applications practice, personas for the mobile traveler, and source code from the key devices of our times help you understand what devices to use, and what networks to take advantage of. What other book shows how Einstürzende Neubaten is a key metaphor for wireless architecture that produces dynamic mobile applications.

From the Back Cover

"The world is going wireless and Mark Beaulieu explains how it's done. Wireless Internet Applications and Architecture is a complete description of what is, what will be, and how they both work."
--Tom Wheeler, president/CEO, Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association

Wireless Internet Applications and Architecture: Building Professional Wireless Applications Worldwide is a comprehensive technical overview of wireless Internet technology, applications, and content issues. The wireless Internet of the future will be able to serve large, specialized market segments with new devices, services, and content through wide bandwidth (MMDS, GPRS) and always-on capability, offering people the freedom to communicate in ways they never have before.

Divided into three easy-to-follow parts, the book begins with an introduction to the wireless Internet, the language, and the core wireless concepts. This part examines the trends, forces, and organizations that are shaping the growth of wireless Internet technology. The next part shows how to create mobile personas and wireless applications and make them effective. The chapters here tackle how to construct messaging, browsing, and interactive and conversational voice portal applications by highlighting application code and examples of mobile content. In the final part, components of wireless architecture are described so that readers can learn about wireless WAN, LAN, and PAN standards and practices and XML server strategies, as well as the effect wireless architectural elements are having on the market. An added plus is the discussion on mCommerce servers – the next step in eCommerce – and location-based applications that enable users to make purchases from mobile devices.

Wireless Internet Applications and Architecture is intended for both wireless application developers and architects who are building the next generation of wireless services, and the general IT audience. This book is a key reference for producing anything from applications to wireless information services to interactive wireless computer games. Ultimately, it is all one Internet, but it is the wireless Internet that offers special properties for reaching a different group of end users and will provide revenue opportunities that are not available in the wired world.

This review is from: Wireless Internet Applications & Architecture (Paperback)

Wireless Internet overviews the various technologies and architectures of what is becoming a necessity for corporate technical staffs. It tells how to devise and implement wireless Internet applications and reveals the latest wireless hardware and software trends. It describes business products, standards, and applications, and explains issues involved in integrating wireless capabilities. It covers phone-based systems, PDAs, the wireless office and evaluates the current state of wireless communications.

To a layperson, this book serves as a good guide to learn the language of the wireless Internet and offers an initiation of the amazing applications that are enabled when wireless telecommunications and the Internet work together.

To an experienced engineer, this book gives an overview of the technology enablers and new standards such as WAP, BLUETOOTH and the road map for Global wireless data.

To an industry person, this book acts as a resource center for existing applications on the Wireless Internet. It provides an exhaustive list of existing applications created on the Wireless Internet.

Overall a very well researched book, it covers a lot of ground. Clearly written by an expert, I strongly recommend this book as a developer's guide and reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative book, April 29, 2002
This review is from: Wireless Internet Applications & Architecture (Paperback)
There is not one book as of today, that is as comprehensive as this one.

A good book to understand the evolution of wireless domain in terms of infrastructure, technology, devices and applications.

Very informative for any person wishing to understand the wireless world. Especially the first part, which deals with the evolution, providing technical details in an understandable format.

Sections on "How cell phones work?", "i-mode story" etc are very useful and informative.

The book is an ideal companion for sales and solution delivery personnel from the point of view of understanding concepts clearly.

Highly recommended for those who wish to dwell in the wireless domain or those who are already providing solutions in wireless space.

This review is from: Wireless Internet Applications & Architecture (Paperback)
This timely and relevant book covers the topic of wireless architecture and application development in a through and well presented format. The content is very up to date and well explained.

When recommending books I always ask myself if I would give the text away in my TrainingCity.com classes. "Wireless Internet Applications and Architecture" by Mark Beaulieu passes that test with flying colors.

Although the book is targeted at product developers it would be an excellent addition to any telecom or IT profession faced with the task of understanding the current wireless infrastructure and state of emerging XML based wireless applications.
