Great reception over 2 stories, unfortunately can't understand a word,

The title sums it up. No problem at all getting a clear signal over long distance and from one floor to the next. Just not possible to understand anything. Tried it at closer distances and with different people talking and determined that neither the distance nor the person speaking made a difference. Just sounds like a dog barking. We just need to be able to say a name (first and last name, i.e. 2 words), have the name understood so that the person can come to the building entrance. Pretty simple. Not trying to communicate complex and novel ideas over the intercom. But completely useless for this purpose. Every name sounds like the other. This intercom might be useful in monitor mode for picking up noises (like a baby crying), but not for speech.

As many other reviewers have mentioned, these are not the MOST clear when it comes to intercoms, but they work for us. I was just sick of either 'nicely' yelling a response or walking back and forth down halls or stairs to answer my wife. She is happy with the purchase. We have FOUR of these in our house and it makes it MUCH easier to locate someone or get a quick answer. It took me a few times to understand how to add another intercom to the 'system', but just a little bit of trial and error, like most electronic gadgetry. The price is pretty good for an entry intercom system and I like the fact that I didn't have to run any wires. Also, Ebay had the AC adapters for these SUPER cheap, so we plug 'em right to the wall and have two that are using the voice-activated response. You basically have to make a sound or say a random word to have it start up (because the person on the other end usually won't get that first word anyhow), but then it works fine. We have become use to the process and are happy we have them now.I'd recommend these to anyone who is okay with having a wireless setup that are being used in a two-story house.

Far from the best but it may do,

The reception is great and interference is not an issue. The two problems are. One -The system is not duplex only one person can speak at a time and Two - The sound quality is atrocious. If you speak directly toward it the other person will likely not undrstand what you are saying. It works best if you talk normally not toward the unit, than the other person can understand what you are saying. It is a shame the unit does not have better quality speakers in it.

operating manual is awful,

I recently purchased 3 Chamberlain wireless intercom units plus an outside doorbell unit through Amazon.com. The descriptions of the units pre-purchase sounded great - exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately the people at Chamberlain who write or approve the operating manuals for their products are not very good at their jobs. The operating manual is very poorly written, seems to go in circles - refers in several places "to the table below", and immediately below the text referencing "the table below", is more text - not a table. The units are capable of being used as room monitors - for example in an infants room. When I plug one of the units into a transformer for 12V power source (so it does not deplete the 4 AA batteries over many hours), the unit turns itself off of the "monitor" function after some unknown period of time. No where in the operating manual is any information about this - not in how to operate the unit nor in troubleshooting. Final complaint - the units can be programmed on 1 of 4 different channels or set up to monitor all channels. But is there a clear description of how to set up a multi-unit system to use different channels (for example, one unit as a monitor in an infants room, other units to communicate only with each other)? Of course not.

Waste of money - do not buy,
This review is from: Wireless Portable Intercom Voice Activated (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was initially excited to be able to call the kids for whatever reason rather than hunting them down. (The house is over 5000 square feet.) The monitors all made funny clicking sounds - all the time. There was a delay which caused me to hear only part of the message spoken. Though it advertised no interference with baby monitors, I did have problems with the baby monitor squeaking. After about six months, they completely stopped working. I replaced the batteries, followed all the troubleshooting directions, to no avail. They are now completely useless. I am now having a wired intercom system put in, while costly is guaranteed to work with out any of these issues.

We have a large house with a steel beam running the length of the house and many of the intercom systems are disrupted by either the beam or the distance. This intercom is performing excellently. You press the button and hear a beep so you know you can begin talking. The clarity is very good. Very easy setup. I don't use batteries, just plug it in, find the channel and you are set. Highly recommend.

We found the intercoms to be well worth the value. They're dependable and easy to use. We experienced no interference with the intercoms, and voices are nearly distortion-free. It's also handy to be able to buy the intercoms individually to add to the system. Just what we needed.

I bought a set of these at the local HD store. The audio is so distorted that they are useless. We threw themn away in disgust.

These intercoms work great for me. Here's my story:,

I actually ordered two of the NLS2's. This is nothing more than a total of 4 NLS1 units. My house is steel, my shop is steel, my stable is steel. I put one in the shop, stable, basement and then use one as a base on the first floor. The shop is about 100' away, and the horse stable is about 100' away too. The basement is on a lower floor in my "man cave". The units work flawlessly and are clear. You do have to press the talk button, wait a few milliseconds for the beep, and then talk. They are a little tricky to program but Chamberlin support walked my thru my confusion with ease and courtesy. Long story short, the units worked exactly as advertised and were perfect for my situation. And now I don't have to get yelled at because I didn't hear someone trying to find me. And trust me . . . that alone is worth the money I paid for these!!! lol 2-thumbs up, it get's a "5".
