5.0 out of 5 stars A bittersweet, hilarious, & beautiful tale.
Being a big fan of Eric Schaeffer's films "My Life's in Turnaround," "If Lucy Fell," and "Fall," I was thrilled to see "Wirey" and after it came out, it took me awhile to finally see it(it never came to the theatres where I was living at the time, so I had to wait for the DVD release)but when I purchased it(without seeing it, mind...

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly interesting flick
Wirey Spindell, a film I was not even sure I wanted to see, surprised me. I've only seen "If Lucy Fell" which, well, I didn't much like (Sarah Jessica Parker and Elle McPherson and it still didn't work for me). This movie, tries too hard perhaps, but was really affecting. Schaffer has something to say. Critics, and most did not like this film, bemoan his...

Being a big fan of Eric Schaeffer's films "My Life's in Turnaround," "If Lucy Fell," and "Fall," I was thrilled to see "Wirey" and after it came out, it took me awhile to finally see it(it never came to the theatres where I was living at the time, so I had to wait for the DVD release)but when I purchased it(without seeing it, mind you), I fell in love with it just as I had his last three films. "Wirey" is loosly based on Schaeffer's own childhood and Eric Mabius plays the younger version of Wirey, while Eric plays the older. Absolutely hilarious at moments(watch the baby...trust me), hard to watch in others(the tense relationship between he and his mother), and blissfully romantic with his ongoing affair with love. It's so much different than most films, that is, being well-written and original, and I highly recommend it.

I saw wirey spindell in theater in new york, and I thought itwas awesome! I had never heard of it before, but it is a trueendorsement of indie films. If you love laughing, you'll love this movie. I loved Devin Matthews-Johnson and Eric Mabius too, they're both so cute!

This is an amazing movie especially if you are an Eric Schaeffer fan.All of his movies were leading up to this one.I love all of them, but this is the best so far. The dialogue and the casting are great...its real The movie effects you and leaves something with you. All really good movies imprint something on you. If your not an Eric Schaeffer fan you will be after this.

Critics, and most did not like this film, bemoan his lack of of success. I applaud him for his film. It is a gutsy and adult film. He shares his life with us and it isn't pretty. It is consistently interesting and at times, a bit moving. Not crying moving, but you do feel for Wirey. It is brillant? No. But considering all the junk coming from mainstream Hollywood these days, I enjoyed the 1hr 40min. I applaude someone who can put themselves out there like this. It worth seeing to enjoy the performances of Eric Mobius and Samantha Buck (who? You should know her soon enough) who are both excellent. Samanta Buck is a revelation. As to the film itself,I think Kevin Thomas of the LA Times said it well. ""Wirey Spindell" may be too heady for some tastes but can stir you deeply, if you're open to it." If you don't want to listen to me, he is a pretty darned well respected film critic. Enjoy.

Admittedly my motive for purchasing "Wirey Spindell" was less than innocent. I simply wanted to see hunky Eric Mabius naked. I found images of him on this site and wanted to know what kind of move included him the context of nudity... At first, I was not sure what I had come across in "Wirey Spindell." It started off very sort of detached from the original reason I rented the movie. I had secretly hoped for a feature length view of Eric Mabius' derriere. To my surprise I found the move overall, in a word, entertaining. I was surprised to learn of some of the lead character's exploits, and intrigued by it's frank, gritty, language and subject matter. The movie comes across as a particularly sexually charged retrospective of a man about to get married. A man, "Wirey Spindell," not without his issues as you may have guessed. I rather enjoyed the look back at his childhood exploits. It reminded me of my own childhood adventures. The movie walks us through his life and times from youth to coming of age to current day and concludes with a rather satisfying, befitting ending to an otherwise colorful, bohemian drama.

1.0 out of 5 stars Somebody stop this guy!, October 5, 2000

It's beyond me how Mr. Schaeffer continues to find funding for his self-indulgent films. He seems to think he's the Woody Allen for the new millennium, but nothing could be further from the truth. Having seen two of his previous efforts, I should have known better than to give "Wirey" a try. But I'm a forgiving soul, and I watched it. Assuming that Mr. Schaeffer's repeated use of himself as a leading man reflects an autobiographical bent to his work, he's a misogynistic, selfish jerk who seems to think that everyone else should be interested in his inability to find romantic happiness. Note to Eric: Just because you know you're a jerk, that doesn't make it okay to be a jerk. A line from "Search and Destroy" also comes to mind: "Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting." Avoid this film like the plague.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Will Only Enjoy This Movie If You Are Intelligent, June 5, 2002

This film is sweet, beautiful, hilarious and so realistic, it is amazing. It is sad to me to see such spiteful, negative reviews posted here, but it is clear that these people prefer bogus big-budget Hollywood films to true works of art. I think Schaeffer is one of the funniest writers/actors around. Like Woody Allen, he presents New York so well cinematically, especialy here in Wirey Spindell. His earlier works have been a little weak in parts, as Wirey Spindell sometimes is, but he has pretty much made his masterpiece with this one. Some of the moments presented in this film will absolutely break your heart, or make you laugh hysterically, or simply contemplate your own life, especially if you are of this generation. Wirey Spindell reminded me so much of my own life and thoughts, that I was blown away by it. I cannot get enough of his films, and I am so thankful that there are enough fans of his work to at least let him keep making films, which will be hailed as genius someday by the masses. You MUST see this film. It is one of the BEST and most honest "romantic comedies" EVER MADE.

This movie is really good, it's just too long. Cut out the time when he was in college and the film would be much more marketable. EVERY scene that take place in the present is great - especially his encounter with the Russian hooker. Callie Thorne is incredible as his fiance, as is the boy who plays him at his youngest age. I'm sure that when it is shown on cable it will develope a huge following!

If the world liked Eric Schaeffer as much as Eric Schaeffer liked
Eric Schaeffer, every univeristy and private college in North America would have its own General ed Western-civ course on this director's work. This man's self delusion reaches to such levels of grandeur it is almost like witnessing a natural wonder such as the Aurora Borealis or a solar eclipse. He is so amazing in his confidence that one can not look away, despite the hackneyed content. He is a cinematic Hitler.
