3.0 out of 5 stars Not as simple as I was hoping for
I purchased this book because I wanted to tackle some of the kitchen wiring myself during a renovation (convert 240 to 120, add some receptacles, etc.). It had good reviews and a catchy title that I assumed would describe the process to me in layman terms. While the book does have some diagrams, which I find useful for understanding how wiring works, it's void of any...

This review is from: Wiring Simplified: Based on the 2008 National Electrical Code (Paperback)
This is a great resource for those handymen who are comfortable working with electricity. This book is very easy to read and not only covers the enforced National Electrical Code (NEC) but also provides detailed installation procedures of home electrical material/devices such as wiring, receptacles, lighting fixtures & etc. With prolific pictures, it shows devices and material available and required for specific tasks. In addition it explains & shows correct installation procedures.
As a retired electrical engineer for 18 years, I purchased this book to re-familiarize myself with the latest NEC codes. I can attest to this books value to those having a small or large electrical project and wish to install a safe installation.

This book (or its previous editions) has been invaluable to this do-it-yourself owner of four different homes over the years. With the book in one hand and tools in the other I have been able to rewire much of two older homes, newly wire finished basements in two others and completely rewire a remodelled kitchen (all up to the current code of the time). The material is well organized and presented in language understandable to the non-professional.

THE BEST HANDS-ON, HOW-TO WIRING BOOK FOR THE LAYMAN AND TRADESMAN
I've owned and used and loaned and lost various editions since the 60's, both in my home and on the job as a carpenter/stagehand. It's Indispensable for the once-in-a-while electrician or homeowner whether he/she is adding a single outlet or upgrading a new kitchen. Working with this book will give you confidence in the safety, utility, and re-salability of your project. Nothing extraneous, excellent index, gender friendly. No condescension.
The illustrations are the best in the business, and there are an awful lot of fancy wiring books to choose from. The precise (and time honored) diagrams and carefully edited text provide the reader with the information needed to do a good, safe, and efficient job.

This is a straightforward, easy to understand book if you've had a little bit of exposure to home wiring. There are good diagrams (but few photos) and the common kinds of things you might want to do in a home or on a farm are covered well. It explains common devices like 2-way and 3-way switches and circuit breakers, and it covers both 110 and 220 volt circuits. The text explains how to do things like adding extensions and switches in conformance with the 2008 edition of the national electrical code. Compliance with the code is the best way to make sure the wiring you do is safe, properly grounded and not going to cause a fire. This book is a good way to make sure you know what to do before you pick up that pair of pliers. I had an edition from the late 1970s, and I got this new one when I started a project that requires adding a couple of circuits for a basement room I'm finishing. The text of this edition is easier to understand and the diagrams are clearer than in the older one, and of course the electrical code has changed substantially.

As an alternative or a step beyond this book, consider the Black & Decker Complete Book of Home Wiring, which has excellent photographs and covers wiring devices for home theater and other related low voltage applications . If you're a complete novice, the Black & Decker book is probably a better place to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good reference book, June 29, 2008

This review is from: Wiring Simplified: Based on the 2008 National Electrical Code (Paperback)
In my circumstances I wouldn't be without this book. I'm doing some electrical wiring upgrades and repairs in my home. This book is a Godsend as I'm not all that knowledgeable about the subject. However, I just look up the subject in this book and it gives me both an illustration and a written explanation on how to accomplish a task. I compare the work required with my skill level and decided whether I can do the work or not before I tear into a wall, open a wiring box, or disconnect any wires. If it appears the task is beyond me, I don't do it myself. This little book, accompanied by the most recent code book, has allowed me to do some things I couldn't have figured out on my own. It also discusses essential safety and wiring techniques. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is planning on doing his or her own standard wiring. You'll know whether or not you're up to the job and if not, you can call an electrician. In the long run, it'll probably save some hard earned cash, a few hours of blown fuses, darkness, or worse, a serious accident or fire. Word to the wise; buy it before you try it!

I purchased this book for a friend but own an older revision. Back when I was 14 I was able to figure out how to run electricity out to my parents garage and install lights and receptacles using this book. What I like most about this book is that it contains the information a do-it-yourselfer will need and no fluff. All instruction is written so that a do-it-yourselfer can wire circuits in compliance with the National Electric Code.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Old Reliable...., March 2, 2011
This review is from: Wiring Simplified: Based on the 2008 National Electrical Code (Paperback)
I have two editions of this book with the 2008 edition being the most recent. This book has been in print since before 1940, is somewhat quaint, particularly with the illustrations, but keeping the older editions makes for entertaining reading and provides perspective on how the National Electrical Code has developed over the decades. An effort has been made to update some of the illustrations for the 2008 edition. This book is particularly useful if one is working with older buildings where the wiring was installed in the post-war era as many of the illustrations seem to reflect this. The book was originally written at a time when the Rural Electrification Program was in full swing and as such, some of the chapters are focused directly to farm and outbuilding wiring as opposed to house wiring per se. It is a very good primer for basic electrical work and explains, among other things, one and three phase wiring, parallel and series wiring, and advancements in circuit breakers and wiring design. I look forward to the next edition in 2011/2012 when it comes out!

This review is from: Wiring Simplified: Based on the 2008 National Electrical Code (Paperback)
Used this and previous editions for 40 years, on 4 houses & several rentals, from repairs to complete rewiring to new construction. For the homeowner, clear and mostly simple. When you wire to code, it's safer and keeps the banks and insurance companies and inspectors and appraisers off your back. That also pays off when you go to sell. Just keep to the newest addition. If you are doing more than just replacing a broken plug, it sure beats anything like the "Time-Life" handyman-type series; more authoritative & comprehensive than most others you can buy at local big-box hardware/builder supply yards. Just don't think it makes you an electrician, never do someone else's house, and follow ALL safety rules. It is wise to check your state & local laws too - to see if you are allowed to work on your own property, and see if there are local additions/variations on code. Some building officials will work with you, some won't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for wiring your own house., December 21, 2010
This review is from: Wiring Simplified: Based on the 2008 National Electrical Code (Paperback)
I recently finished reading this book and found it to be very thorough at explaining how to plan and implement wiring for homes and farm buildings.
I did not expect it to cover as much as it did when I bought it at a local hardware store for $7.50. It describes not only how to install wiring to meet code, but the basics of why you are doing certain things, the safety concerns (more than just the generic entries I have seen in other books) and explains the use of 2 and 3 wire systems for saving money and time on your project.
I have to say that this is the best of the wiring books I have purchased to this point and cheap at what I found it for.
