This review is from: Wisconsin German Land and Life (Hardcover)
The three authors who contributed to "Wisconsin German Land and Life" have impressive credentials and have written a book that will be fascinating to anyone whose ancestors immigrated from Germany's Rhineland to Wisconsin. The authors divide their work into 1) the pre-emigration situation in the German Westerwald and other parts of the Rhineland; 2) a description of the attraction of Wisconsin's forests and prairies to the Rhenish farmers contemplating immigration; 3) a detailed look at the experiences of these new settlers, focusing on the farming practices of the former inhabitants of the Rhineland as compared with the farming methods of other immigrant groups. While the main emphasis is on Rhenish settlers, the general farming practices in the old country are also described - a subject that is difficult to find published in an English language book. This volume fills a real gap for those of us who want to know how our ancestors lived in both 19th century Germany and in Wisconsin. The book is thoroughly indexed and well footnoted.
