By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wild Wisconsin Notebook (Outdoor Essays & Reflections) (Paperback)
Drawing upon his more than twenty years of experience and expertise, James Buchholz's Wild Wisconsin Notebook features 144 short nature essays divided into 12 groups, one for each month of the year. Each essay focuses upon a specific wild animal or plant native to Wisconsin, with a brief yet vividly detailed description of that creature's life, habits, and cycles. Illustrated with black-and-white ink drawings of various flora and fauna, Wild Wisconsin Notebook is a superbly presented and strongly recommended guide for any Wisconsin nature lover who is interested in learning more!

Bought this as a gift for my niece to read to her sons- 6 & 2. They like the monthly divisions which are accurate
information, yet easy to read to children, but not boring for adults. Good introduction/renewal for nature enthusiasts.

This book is fun to read in that it provides a non-naturalist with a lot of interesting information about Wisconsin wildlife -- bugs, birds, creatures that live in rivers and lakes, mammals, reptiles, and various kinds of vegetation. I find this book most enjoyable when I read the articles during the month they're categorized in: i.e., Cardinals are listed in January, so I enjoy reading about them then. The only drawback to this arrangement is that when I see a cardinal in July, I have to go back to the January section to read it. Recommended.
