I was hoping for a lot more entries in this little book so I was rather disappointed in its length when it arrived. That said, those few speeches that are included are indeed lengthy, and the editor has done an excellent job of inserting background material in the prologue and introduction. Nerbern has been at it for most of his life, and is a great choice to edit these selections. The three chapters cover speeches given by Chief Red Jacket, Chief Joseph, and Chief Seattle, and all are remarkable examples of the wisdom of true indigenous leaders. If you're looking for quick quotes, however, this is not the book for you -- unless you're willing to peruse each chapter carefully and extract your own. Overall, this is a great addition to the philosopher's, historian's, or teacher's library.
