Book Description

April 30, 2002
“You must promise me to go back to Wisdom one day. You see, little girl, Wisdom is your Source. It’s where your blood was born. . . .”

The words of her grandfather echo in her ears as Maia Ransom, a nurse from Michigan, arrives on the island of St. Croix for the first time. She has always been curious about the great estate her grandfather lovingly described, but the importance of this place has suddenly become vital. A private woman with no lover and no children, Maia is slowly succumbing to the same disease that killed her mother. She has three weeks to find Wisdom. Once there, Maia hopes to uncover the rich history of her people—and the will to fight for her own life.

But once on the intoxicating Caribbean island, Maia finds that the inhabitants resent her presence and are determined to lead her astray. Maia finally locates the estate, but the once-grand manor now sits crumbling in disrepair, home to the dissolute, alcoholic, and severely ill Severin Johanssen, the only living son of its former owner. After an initial frosty dismissal, Maia finds herself living at Wisdom as Severin’s temporary nurse.

Seeking refuge, Maia befriends Noah Langston, a striking Crucian lawyer who is doing all he can to help his people rise up to self-sufficiency. Noah soon opens up in Maia tender emotions she never imagined were hers to feel. But what he discovers about her family will shock Maia to the core. For Wisdom is not just her legacy, it might be her future. And there are people who will do everything in their power to keep Maia from fulfilling her destiny.

With a clear eye and a poet’s heart, Heather Neff has written an absorbing, redemptive novel of struggle, family secrets, and making the profound choice between hiding safely from the truth or leaping through uncertainty towards true love. Wisdom is ultimately about finding one’s true soul.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A family legend draws an African-American nurse from Michigan to the sultry Caribbean island of St. Croix in Neff's gutsy first novel. Maia Ransom, the descendant of slaves who worked the St. Croix plantation of Wisdom a century and a half ago, visits the island for three weeks to investigate the stories told to her by her grandfather. Braving native scorn and lecherous pursuers, Maia insinuates herself into the life of the last Wisdom heir, Severin Johanssen, a nasty layabout and drunk who is dying of liver cancer. Maia is dying, too, of ovarian cancer, and finds herself strangely sympathetic to the plight of the objectionable Severin, who possesses the deed to the once grand, now dilapidated estate. Maia elicits help from local black lawyer Noah Langston, who unearths evidence proving that Maia's grandfather was really the legitimate son of a love marriage between the freed slave Zara Ransom and the white owner of Wisdom, Jakob Johanssen. Suspense builds in the form of a burgeoning romance between Noah and Maia, jealous jockeying for Wisdom's ownership on the part of greedy white descendants and the ultimate race for time before death claims the main characters. Neff has fashioned a contrived plot in which random threads are destined to be spun together too neatly, but her characters convince, especially the island natives hostile to outsiders. The author knows the violent beauty of the island and wisely avoids romanticizing its racial tensions and brutal history. Choosing a main character who is doomed from the outset is tricky, but Neff pulls it off with somber, brave conviction.

From Booklist

The last line--"True wisdom is the love of those who came before. And the love of those who are yet to come"--aptly sums up the drama of this enchanting tale. Maia Ransom decides to die on her own terms when she is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. As far back as she can remember, her grandfather told her stories of the estate, Wisdom, that he grew up on in St. Croix. Working as a nurse in Detroit and seeing so many people die, Maia feels compelled to learn of her true ancestry before she can die peacefully. She travels to the beautiful Caribbean island for 21 days to find answers to her family's legacy. She finally finds the estate, only to be mystified by the secrets and myths that surround the old dilapidated manor. Maia discovers that Wisdom is not just her history and a part of who she is but also her future and who she will become. Lillian Lewis

4.0 out of 5 stars "Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover", January 30, 2003
This review is from: Wisdom (Hardcover)
At first glance Heather Neff's "Wisdom" may look like another one of those "journey to find my roots" lightweight novels. It is in fact a novel that reads so beautifully it is almost like a long poem. Maia is from Michigan and visits St. Croix for a 3-week vacation. Stories have been passed down in her family about their Crucian roots and Maia wants to see the island. She meets Severin (nicknamed "Seven" because he is the 7th son) who is the sole male survivor of the Wisdom estate. While there Maia discovers her own ties to the Wisdom estate and Seven. The author "Heather Neff" was inspired to write this novel after living on the island of St. Croix for two years and painting a picture of a slave sitting on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Ms. Neff is very respectful about the island, and the natives and touches on the anti-American sentiment that is under the surface when Americans visit these islands and treat them as their own private playgrounds. There are underlying themes of love, loneliness, and illness. Ms Neff is able to carry all of these subplots off while keeping the story interesting. I recommend novel to anyone that enjoys reading about travel, family histories, or simple love stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating, intelligent and very sensual!, May 4, 2002

This review is from: Wisdom (Hardcover)
It took me just a few pages to dive into this unusually intelligent book, filled with suspense!

The novel is very refreshing, full of unexpected twists and turns. It's a stunning blend of history and fiction, emotions and realism. The visual quality reminded me of "Blackgammon", Heather Neff's first and also outstanding novel!

While "Blackgammon" made me wander the streets of Europe, "Wisdom" made me want to wake up in the Caribbean again, even if it meant to face the mixed past of this region. It makes you long for that quiet corner, where you can tune out everything around you and step into another world.

I can't wait for the next book by Heather Neff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed, Deep, and Important, April 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Wisdom (Paperback)
Dr. Heather Neff's second novel, "Wisdom", is an intriguing journey into race relations set in the Caribbean island St. Croix. Neff's characters are a treat, at once elegant and real, created with depth and feeling. Neff explores love, humanity, and truth in her smart and poignant novel. Maia is a strong female character and leads the reader through a period of growth that involves her gay friend Damien, her lover Noah, and her slave ancestor's owners, the Johanssens. It is a rich novel filled with vivid descriptions, moving dialogue, and a touch of mystery. The book is easy to read despite its hard-hitting issues of racism. Definitly a book I recommend, not only to read, but to re-read.
