Yogi Berra is the baseball player best known for having memorable quotes, yet many other players, managers and owners have said very profound things that have applicability outside of baseball. Some of the best are collected here, with the cutoff point being the year 1969. Many of the greatest to ever play the game are quoted here, some are so profound and somewhat against their public persona that you wonder if they weren't in fact ghostwritten.
My all-time favorite quote from a baseball man is from the great Branch Rickey, who said, "Luck is the residue of design." Those words should be placed in every classroom and boardroom in the world and pondered at the start of each day. They sum up the best approach to anything in life.
My favorite that pertains to baseball is from Willie Stargell. "Nobody ever said, `Work ball!' They say, `Play ball!' To me that means having fun." While these quotes are from men of baseball, most of them can be applied to every human endeavor that takes effort. If you take them seriously, you can go a long way in life.
