What is Wisdom Panel® 2.0 DNA Test?

With a simple cheek swab, you can uncover DNA-based insights that may help you understand your dog’s unique appearance, behaviors, and wellness needs. You’ll be emailed an official Ancestry Report revealing your dog’s genetic background including:

  • Mixed Breed Dog: breed ancestry identification back to great-grandparents
  • Purebred Dog: breed certification and level of genetic diversity
  • Designer Dog: certification that your dog is a true 50/50 hybrid of two purebred parents
  • Adult weight range prediction: to help you make apprpriate nutrition and diet choices
  • Breed insights to help you provide a better training program, understand behavior, and create an effective care and wellness plan

How does Wisdom Panel® work?

Once your sample is received at our lab, it is scanned into our database and assigned to a batch for testing. It then undergoes processing to extract the DNA from your dog’s cells which is examined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers are sent to a computer that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the last three generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), two different breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight different great-grandparent breeds allowed. Our computer used information from our extensive breed database to fill these potential pedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave each a score representing how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dog’s data. The pedigree with the overall best score is the one which is selected and provided to you in your dog’s individualized report.

Can Wisdom Panel® 2.0 identify health issues or disease predispositions?

Wisdom Panel® 2.0 can determine the breed makeup of a dog – it is not designed to determine which disease traits – if any – might be present in a dog. The real value in this test is that with knowledge of a dog’s breed ancestry, owners can work together with their veterinarians to develop a more targeted care plan for their dog and have a better understanding of their dog’s physical and behavioral traits. This one-time investment helps owners feel confident they are providing their dog with the best care possible.

Can puppies be tested with Wisdom Panel® 2.0?

Yes. Wisdom Panel® 2.0 is designed for dogs of all ages and is safe and easy to be used at any stage in a dog's development. However, we do recommend waiting until a puppy has been weaned to prevent cross-contamination from suckling on their mother and having cells from her skin and milk in their mouth at the time of swabbing.

How are key physical traits inherited?

Breeds can combine their influences in countless, fascinating ways. It’s a unique combination that makes your dog one-of-a-kind. Your dog may behave like – or strongly resemble – just one of the breeds in its makeup, but – much more commonly – your dog’s looks and personality will blend aspects of these breeds.

To learn more about inherited genes and how they determine the different dominant and recessive traits in canines, watch the informative video at the top of the page.

Additional Product Information

Dogs can’t talk, but their DNA can™
Over 25 million mixed-breed dog owners know their dogs…but not as well as they could. Where does Buddy get his curly tail from? Why does he love digging holes in the backyard? Could I be doing more to make him happier and healthier? Your dog may not be able to tell you the answers – but his DNA can. Wisdom Panel® 2.0, the most comprehensive breed identification DNA test on the market, can not only help unravel your dog’s unique breed history, it can also provide DNA-based insights towards optimizing your dog’s overall care and training needs.

Wisdom Panel® can determine the ancestry of a mixed-breed, purebred or designer dog by testing for more than 200 breeds. A dog’s ancestry can influence him in surprising ways. Obvious and not-so-obvious physical traits plus behaviors like digging, herding and barking all come from the various breeds in a dog’s family tree. Once an owner understands a dog’s natural tendencies, it makes it possible to create a tailored training, exercise and nutrition program to fit his one-of-a-kind needs.

Can Wisdom Panel identify the breeds in a dog that was born outside the U.S.?

Wisdom Panel was developed using genetic markers from American Kennel Club (AKC) breeds and some non-AKC breeds in the U.S., as well as purebred dogs from the United Kingdom, Australia, and Western Europe. Through the course of our test development, we have observed that certain breeds sometimes have quite different genetic breed signatures in different geographical regions, particularly with comparison to the same breed in Europe or Australia. Due to these geographic variations, Wisdom Panel is only offered in the appropriate geographical areas and we do not recommend the test for dogs originating in countries outside those stated above.

I tested my adopted puppy, who I knew to be a mixed breed, purely out of curiosity.

First, the process itself. It is very easy to do; the instructions and materials are well done. I was especially careful with the waiting period for objects in the mouth (Phoenix is approximately 5 months, and is still in the chewing phase), so that presented a little bit of an issue, though undoubtedly a necessary one. I took her toys away and did it very late in the night as she was sleeping. The two included swabs have light bristles on the end. Phoenix did not mind one bit; in fact, she went back to sleep as I was doing it. Everything for return shipping is included, and it is all quite simple. It was marked as received 1 day after tracking indicated (again, completely understandable), and the website has its own tracker as it is processed. It was completed in about 7 days, 2 weeks before the promise date.

More importantly, the results. I notice some of the others here doubt the results because it does not meet their preconceptions. This is understandable to a degree, but I came in with a more open mind. My dog's physical traits can be interpreted in many different ways, and it seems everyone has their own opinions (wire haired fox terrier/lab mix was the rescue's best guess, but she was very up front that it was in fact nothing more than a guess). I will include a picture on the product page so you can see for yourself (edit: this feature doesn't seem to be available right now for some reason, sorry).

With that said, I was extremely surprised with the results. Yet, when I put the pieces available together, it did make some sense. Logically of course it could be argued that you could say that about just about anything, but I take it at face value.

This is the thing about genetic testing: there is a certain degree of certainty that is not 100% pretty much ever (because there are exceptions to the rule, and while most are the rule, there are quite a few exceptions).

That being said, I loved this test!

It arrived in the mail pretty quickly; per the instructions, I opened it up and went online to registered the kit where I answered questions like how old my dog is, how much he weighs, but nothing that was breed specific.

My dog HATED the bristly swabs on his gums but they're necessary in order to get a large number of cells for confidence in testing, I let them air dry, put them back in the package making sure not to completely close the plastic up (so as not to allow a damp, warm breeding ground for bacteria) and then forgot to mail the thing back for a good week.

I got the email that they had received the test a few days after I mailed it out.
I got the email with the results about three weeks after that.

The results? I'm pretty sure they're really freaking accurate.
I got my dog from some random person who said that a friend's Pit got together with their pure Dobie while no one was looking (yeah, right) so I thought I was going to get a smaller version of the long-legged momma dog that I saw on the property. Instead, what I got was a long-legged, medium hair, black and tan, ball crazy, very obviously Doberman and not obviously a Pit, whiney dog. Everyone at the bark park speculated about how "there must be greyhound" or "he's definitely got some dane" and it was really annoying because all the traits they're associating with other dogs I KNOW came from his mom because he looks just like her.

If your dog is from a rural, high-kill shelter or was picked up as a stray, there's a very good chance he or she is highly mixed. So keep that in mind before you order this product, as their testing capabilities only go three generations.

That being said, I found this entire process to be incredibly enjoyable, as well as educational. Here's a quick step-by-step of my experience:

First, on the advice of other reviewers, I made sure to take the sample over two hours after any food, drink or interaction with humans or my other dog. (While sleeping is likely the easiest.) The instructions are easy to follow and the return packaging is included, so the sample was in the mail the next day.

Second, you will receive an email informing you that they have your sample, and that testing will begin shortly. In our culture of instant gratification, it's rare we have to wait for anything for long these days. So the 2-3 week wait really builds your anticipation! I found myself checking the status every couple of days, eager for the results.

Third, they had my results back in just over 2 weeks. The report is detailed and easy to understand, reading like a family tree. And the results? My fabulous little dog is so highly mixed that they could only identify two breeds at the great-grandparent level!

Am I disappointed? Not at all. As it turns out, my "German Shepherd/Lab" mix has more Greyhound and Weimaraner in her than anything else. This completely explains why she out-runs every other dog at the park. And the Weimaraner shares quite a few physical traits with the Lab (drop ears, short coat, etc) which explains why she was misidentified. (And makes a lot more sense, as she doesn't have the personality of a Lab at ALL.
