This book is a quick read and is an excellent history of the Talmud. It also includes excerpts from the Talmud that should whet your appetite for Talmud study.

I believe the book was recently put back in print. I also believe its copyright has expired and is available as a pdf.

I would shop around as the price quoted here is high. Even if it is available as a pdf, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of the book.
