4.0 out of 5 stars New light on very old Western wisdom, February 17, 2001

This review is from: Wisdom of the West : Pathways to Self-Realization (Paperback)
Wisdom of the West

In her introduction the author writes. `This book is intended for the serious students of esoteric science who have obtained a basic knowledge of Qabalah.' And for sure to get the most from what's written in the later chapters it requires a great deal of understanding of the basic tenets of Qabalah. Nevertheless this book is also a good starting point for anyone seeking to gain some understanding of Qabalah. It is well written and very well illustrated. The author writes in an unpretentious style and since there's a scarcity of readable books dealing with Qabalah it's a valuable introduction to what is after all an `esoteric science' few Westerners are familiar with. As the author reminds us we've come through an era in the West where the majority of seekers after wisdom and truth have felt it necessary to go East to find spiritual enlightenment. Now we have a book, which makes us aware of a very old Western tradition and in many ways more appropriate for Westerners and people living and working in a Western culture As someone who has read many what's commonly called `self-development/personal growth' books I always enjoy reading at length about the author's background and having read of their `journey' I rightly or wrongly make a value judgement as to how much credibility to give the author and their ideas. In the case of Chavah Aima and `Wisdom of the West' there's 18 pages of very interesting information some of which the casual reader may find rather unusual. Particularly the choices she has made during her life and the sources of her guidance. Most of us as we go through life living in the Western world use a very `left brain' methodology for our decision making but here we have someone who writes with considerable credibility about her experiences using other sources of inspiration and guidance.

Her chapter on the beginnings of the Qabalistic tradition makes fascinating reading and makes one wonder why it's taken so long to even begin to make inroads into mainstream western culture-although the author may reply by saying. The attitudes of the `establishment' who administer mainstream religious orders e.g. The Church of England and The Church of Rome have made concerted efforts over the centuries to discredit Qabalistic teachings.

Wisdom of the West is the kind of book one grows into and should not be considered too `above my head.' It's common knowledge there's a part of us, which understands what's written-first of all subconsciously and then gradually coming into our waking consciousness. For instance, the book also includes a beautiful coloured poster of the Tree of Life and just by looking at it one begins to get a feeling for what first appears to be a very complex symbolic message. In conclusion, Wisdom of the West is a very valuable library addition for anyone seeking to wisdom and truth and the useful exercises contained in the book will help speed up the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for initiates, mystics and magicians everywhere, December 8, 2011

This review is from: Wisdom of the West : Pathways to Self-Realization (Paperback)
I am so pleased I found this treasure browsing Amazon. I cannot say enough about it. So much of the books on the western mysteries published today seperate magic and mystic. Its so hard to find a book that shows the importance to have both these aspects on the middle path. This book isn't for someone who doesnt have any knowledge of the Qabalah. I would suggest studying Dion Fortunes "Mystical Qabalah" or Gareth Knights "A Practical Guide to Qabalistic Symbolism" with or prior to this book. There are other good basic Qabalah books but these wo stand as two of the best for most initiates. Aima's book should be a required reading in any magical order. This author is definately a true initiate and not just someone who has studied a ton of books. Its easy to tell someone who has done the work and not just studied it. This is one of those books. There are some wonderful healing exercises in here that utilize the Tree of Life. Some great info on rituals and a beautiful personal story thats inspiring for any seeker. This is a must have.
