Editorial Reviews

Review

"I am an endowed professor of investments at Baylor University. I am well paid, widely quoted and considered an expert in investments. Yet, I do not own a single individual security. Instead, I invest in a globally diversified portfolio of low-cost index funds and ETFs--the same strategy advocated in this book. Why? Based on decades of my research and that of others, in my opinion it is the best way to manage money. Like many finance professors, I heed the advice advocated in this book and I encourage you to do the same." --Dr. William Reichenstein, CFA, Pat and Thomas R. Powers Chair in Investment Management, Department of Finance, Insurance & Real Estate, Hankamer School of Business, Baylor University

"Wise" is exactly the word I would use to describe this book. Larry's insights on investing has little in common with the self-interested advice of Wall Street or the popular financial press. Instead, it's culled from the best, most rigorous research on what really works. The amazing thing you will learn is that wise--and successful--investing really is simple. And the evidence for it, which Larry illustrates in pleasing, true-to-life narrative style, is irrefutable. --Eric Schurenberg, Editor in Chief, CBS MoneyWatch.com and BNET.com

"Larry Swedroe has provided simple yet compelling and timeless investment lessons told through a set of charming stories. Learning the morals from these stories can make all of us better investors." --Burton G. Malkiel, author of A Random Walk Down Wall Street

"Larry Swedroe is a story teller, and all his tales are a masterful mix of practical advice and profound insight. Each has the power to make you wealthier and happier, not least because Swedroe knows the difference." --Gary Belsky, co-author, Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes And How To Correct Them: Lessons From The Life-Changing Science of Behavioral Economics

The world of investing is too often guided by myths of conventional wisdom, such as market timing is a profitable strategy. Swedroe, in his unique style, first debunks these myths using stories and analogies that present the correct logic in familiar and understandable ways. Next, Swedroe presents the research-based evidence that should guide investment decisions in these various scenarios. This process makes investing simple, but not too simple, and Swedroe makes the approach all the more entertaining, but still correctly so. --John A. Haslem is mutual funds research Professor Emeritus of Finance at the University of Maryland, and editor of Mutual Funds: Portfolio Structures, Analysis, Management, and Stewardship (Wiley, 2010).

Larry Swedroe takes complex academic investing concepts and translates them into a language the average person can understand and act upon. In Wise Investing Made Simple and this book Wise Investing Made Simpler real life situations are used to illustrate these concepts.
These books along with his books with the Titles " The Only Guide..." create a truly remarkable resource for the average person to refer to and use. They are the tools one can use to help avoid investing mistakes and to increase the likelihood of achieving long term investing success.

I have read all of Larry's books and his writing is a key component of the education process for the clients of our wealth management firm. In this book, Larry has perfected his story telling
to common sense practical situations that most folks can easily relate to. The way the book is organized is very up to date, clean and efficient. No one can tell the story like Larry does and this is an important part of Larry's evoloution of saving most investors from themselves and the temptations for easy rewards that are often an illusion.

I have read Wise Investing Made SIMPLER, and I have it in hot stand-by for a second look. I concur with Mel's comments, both novice and veterans can benefit and learn from this book. I continue to learn from Larry's books. I like the format, and I like the great collection of stories (analogy/real life examples). The book is divided in 32 chapters. On chapters 1 through 31 you will get to know a lot of characters, some of them will bring back memories. Chapter 4, dealing with "The Price of Friendship" hit close to home. The closing chapter (32) deals with "18 retirement-related issues and the mistakes individuals make" and page 183, dealing with "Becoming Too Conservative an Investor" was an eye opener. My recommendation is to buy this book, read it, read it again--and have your spouse read it too. If for some reason you are not able to buy a copy, just drop by your favorite public library--public libraries are my kind of place--and do a quick review. If you are reaching retirement age, take a look at chapter 32. Thanks Larry for writing QUALITY, NO-NONSENSE type of books. Let me give kudos to Team Amazon for delivering my books ahead of time. Thanks for reading.

Any book by Larry Swedroe should be required reading for the beginning individual investor. This book is an excellent concise review of the investment process and asset selection. It gives interesting real life examples of investor errors and provides data to support his recommendations. Hopefully, this book will encourage the reader to read Swedroe's other books and avoid much of the "financial pornography" which floods the market. Larry's mantra is the superiority of the strategy of investing in "low-cost, passively managed index funds". The reader should consider Larry's other current book on creating an investment plan. This book is another gem and mandatory reading for all investors. The Only Guide You'll Ever Need for the Right Financial Plan: Managing Your Wealth, Risk, and Investments (Bloomberg)

This is one of Larry's best books because he is slowly (after 9 other books) eliminating the clutter and making it easier for normal people to digest the essence of what should be known about how markets really work. This has always been Larry's goal, but it feels like it's getting easier with all the practice of writing and talking (as Gladwell would say, he got his 10,000 hours in).

The price of the book is nothing relative to the value of just a few of the lessons. Larry's first book changed the way I think about investing and "Wise Investing Made Simpler" will do the same for others.

In his new book, "Wise Investing Made Simpler", Larry Swedroe does an excellent job of simplifying often complex financial topics for readers by using real-life short stories that investors can relate to in order to explain each financial topic. Since each topic is a stand-alone short story, this book can be read in short sessions or in one sitting. My bet is that, because of the refreshing way the material is presented, most readers will devour the entire book, non-stop.

This is a book that both novice and experienced investors can benefit and learn from.
