4.0 out of 5 stars An attentive Overview of Persian Mythical Belief, July 23, 2009
This review is from: Wise Lord of the Sky: Persian Myth (Myth and Mankind, 20) (Hardcover)
Overall a very good synopsis of myth and folklore from the land that was once known as Persia. This book, as all Myth and Mankind books do, does an above avergae job of providing relative and significant comparisons between the reasonings behind myth and how they correlated to the needs and wants of the peoples. Each myth, although sometimes particularly brief or overviewing, is set up in a matter that provides an interesting and informing position without overwhelming the reader or loosing their interest. As well this books is great in the context of its visual presence, most stories and important asides tackle issues that the Persians faced as well as little known subleties of interest, the best part of these asides however is often the pictures, drawings, symbols, etc. that accompany them and truly tie the reader into what the Persians understood or realized these myths to truly be, and as in retrospective takes the reader to a far of time and place. Overall Myths of The Persians is a good refference point for anyone generally interested in The myths of the Persians and as well it provides plenty of access point for anyone who wants to do further research making it a true jewel for any contemporary fan of mythology as well as the long term gurus who like to see a little of everything. I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in attaining a brief understanding of Persian and middle eastern mythology and as well reccomend the entire Myth and Mankind selection for its diverse coverage of a majority of the worlds regions and cultures and for its ability to tie myth into the reality that is human thought and mind; Besides any works of Jospeh Campbell which takles the philosophical perspective of mythology in depth these books do a superb job of informing as well as entertaining in an interesting way without overwhelming the reader.
