I 'wish' it didn't end!!,

This is such a great book! I read it in 2 days and I came away feeling like I learned something from Bella and her experiences. Her relationships felt so real and I could relate to many of them. I can't wait for Melina's next book.

A nostalgic tale,
By
This review is from: Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
I didn't quite know what to expect from this book, considering it seemed to be part fun(some great nostalgic scenes that reminded me of when I was younger) and part serious (Bella's brother's 'illness'). Because the book spans most of Bella's life from eight years old until adulthood, I liked seeing her change and grow up but still trying to come to grips with the same issues she had as a child. This was the second book in a row that I've read that dealt with that topic: how to reconcile who you become with who you were. An interesting and enjoyable book.

Great read!,

This was a great book and a quick read- a must read for those of us who grew up in the 70's and 80's, it really brings you back to some things we'd much rather forget(think fashion). Her journey though is something we can all relate to. Looking forward to reading about Bella again!

Gotta read Wish if you lived through the 70's & 80's,

Wish is a great read. Not only is it a funny novel, but it has depth as well. The commentary during the adolescent years was hilarous. Wish hits the right notes when Bella's tells us & relates about her autistic brother during a time when little was known about autism... Well worth the read!!!!

A Walk Down Memory Lane,

This is a wonderful book! Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The story travels thru different time frames of Bella's life and brings back memories of the past, such as bell-bottoms, disco, Farrah Fawcett hair, etc. Anyone born in the 50's and 60's can relate to this book and all the fads mentioned. It is a good read for anyone looking for a down-to-earth, true to the times novel. It's not your ordinary fiction.

Enjoyable trip down memory lane,

I have to agree with the reviewer who said this book is a lot like a time capsule for a certain generation. It was the part of the book I most enjoyed, with great observations and moments I could identify with. There were a few things that were dealt with in a heavy handed way, verging a little on being preachy, but I was able to overlook those and appreciate the book for what it was. Bella could be a little hard to take at times, but I liked her character and following her journey through the decades.

A must read!,

Wish is so fantastic that I had to read it twice. It's an easy read that takes you down memory lane in each chapter. The author completely draws you in so you feel like you know Bella, the main character. Her experiences growing up, trying to find the right job, working for the horrible boss, and her ever-evolving search for HIM are so easy to relate to; and you feel like you are taking the journey with her. I've recommended this book to all of my girlfriends, it's a must read!

Its Better than Television,
By Saint Kate (Merrick, NY USA) - See all my reviews

If you're upset or stressed out this is definately a good comfort read. Each chapter is set in a different year between 1974 (Age: 8 1/2, Idol: Catwoman weekdays Cher weekends, Favorite Song: Me and Bobby Mcgee by Janis Joplin, Prized Possession: Purple Three-Speed Schwinn, with Lime Green Sparkle Banana Seat and Matching Streamers, Best Shoes: Red Dr Scholl's) and 2004 (Age: 39, Idol: Me, Favorite Song: My Favorite Things (My Own Version), Prized Possession: Yoga Mat, Best Shoes: Red Dr Scholl's Hand Painted With Martini Glasses). The chapters definately have a flair for the decade they're set in. The 80's were my personal favorite, especially 1986 (Age: 21, Idol: Meryl Streep in Out of Africa, Favorite Song: Avalon by Roxy Music, Prized Posession: Portrait, Best Shoes: White Pointy Boots with Gold Piping).
While this book isn't going to change your life it is a relaxing quick read and reminiscing about the different time periods is fun.

awesome real and relatabe,
This review is from: Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book in under two days, it was a totally awesome read. i found myself a few times laughing out loud at what happens to Bella, while totally getting an understanding at what life is like for a family with an autisitic child and the struggles they go through and how they learn to pull through and adjust.
its a heartwarming story with a suprise happy ending that warmed my heart. it wasnt some sappy love story nor was it a depressing story. it was presented in a light and cute way through the life of Bella and how she learned to accept her autistic brother which lead to her accepting herself.

Way too obvious and predictable!,
By
This review is from: Wish (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm all for fun, light books but this one was just terrible. The plot is too predictable and I can't say I liked even one of the characters, including the main one, because they were too one-dimensional and flat. The plot got pretty tedious, especially reading about all of this woman's boyfriends because they were all so transparent. It's like the author wrote each one just to teach her a "lesson", versus being a memorable character and it was all just way to obvious. For instance, the vain blonde high-school boyfriend who only liked her because she was skinny taught her that guys should like you for more than your looks. How insightful. This goes on and on until the end of the book.
There were also some annoying grammatical and spelling errors in the book. For instance, she goes to school at Notre Dame, and the author keeps spelling the name of the town as "Southbend" when it's really "South Bend." Don't waste your time reading this. But if you do, at least it won't be a lot of time - it took me about 3 hours to read it. |
