Diana OHehir is the author of four books of poetry and two novels, of which I Wish This War Were Over is the first. she has received a number of awards, including a Guggenheim Fiction Award and a National Foundation of the Arts Fiction Award. I Wish This War Were Over was runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize.

This novel is a flowing, lyrical account of a nineteen year-old girl who takes a train ride cross-country to visit and care for her alcoholic mother. En route she meets an ex-lover of her mother's and they fall in love.
The mother's beauty, ephemerality, self-centered absorption and her daughter's poetic entrapment and love for her mother form the basis of this wonderful book.
