About the Author

Except for six years in New York City, Nan Lyell has lived in Worcester her entire life. She is a freelance writer and photographer, and an avid historian and collector of postcards. Her publications include NONQUITT, A Summer Album, 1872-1985, which won a nationally recognized commendation for excellence from the American Association of State and Local History. For 13 years Nan was tennis editor and Sunday columnist for the Worcester Telegram. In 1981, she was named Tennis Writer of the Year by the New England Lawn Tennis Association. Nan's photo of the circular staircase at Salisbury House, which appeared in Preservation Worcester's Architectural Images III, won the Shearson Lehman Prize for Best Photograph of a National Register building.

In the United States, postcards with pictorial ads had been in use commercially for many years, but not until the Act of Congress on May 19, 1898, were publishers of privately printed postcards given the right to sell cards that could be posted at the same rate as government-issued penny postcards. Picture postcard correspondence was an instant success. As this century began, postcard collecting was the most popular hobby in America. It was cheap, it was fun, and the cards were easy to store.
