Tender and beautiful,
By Cameron Glenn (South Jordan, Utah United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wished for Song: A Portrait of Jeff Buckley (Hardcover)
I think of something so hot, you can't stand to touch it for longer then a second--but that one second leaves a burn and scar and memory that will last forever. That's how I think of Jeff, from his music, and how this book presents him. It's a book celebrating his life, which, by fate, memorializes his death. Jeff "was." He didn't make enough music before he became a past tense, but what he left is worth the continued praise and thoughts it still generates. I wish I could send every teenager who likes boy bands this book, to show them what a real artist looks like.

Its a "behind the scenes" of rise of a young, talented artist. Its not too often you get to hear and see an artist's perspective of another artist.Merri was allowed to photograph Jeff when he was starting out in New York and became his exclusive photographer. The pictures are outtakes from the album artwork and live shots of Jeff in concert. If you are a true fan of Jeff Buckley, you have to have this book.

If you have been as touched by Jeff Buckley's music as I have, then you absolutely need this book. The book's showcase, of course, is many gorgeous photographs of Jeff - studio portraits, live shots, casual-hanging-out shots, publicity photos, etc. It almost feels like this book contains every single photo of Jeff ever taken. (It doesn't, of course, but it feels that way - and it's a good feeling.)
Mixed with the photos are quotes and stories about Jeff as told by his friends and loved ones. The touching words along with the haunting photos of Jeff will really give you a sense of who he was, almost as much as his music does. Buy this book. Drink a mug of warm chai tea, and read it while listening to Grace (preferably on a cold, rainy autumn day.) Once the album is over, your mug is empty and you've reached the last page of this stunning book, you will be changed, in a way that is both bittersweet and right.

The photographs are beautiful, and the anecdotes are truly insightful. I'm used to reading about how Jeff touched so many fans. This book differs in that those who really knew him offer glimpses into his personality. Very candid and touching in parts. Highly recommended.

This book is indispensable to all the die-hard fans out there! The exquisite beauty of Merri Cyr's photography is only enhanced by her connection to Jeff. These aren't the cold photographs of someone hired to do publicity shoots, these are the loving pictures of a friend. And the quotes and stories only enrich our understanding of the complexity of Jeff Buckley. It is beautiful and sweet and sad. You will read it again and again and when you don't have time to read you will find yourself stealing a glance at the photographs. This book is worth every penny.

WONDERFUL,

Although this book is not a biography, it is a well thought collaberation of stories and memories of Jeff friends and loved ones. Only a true fan will embrace this book for all it is worth. The pictures also tell stories of thier own. Like Jeffs music, these pictures show the deversity of his style also his physical appearance. Jeff Buckley never carries the same physical appearance in any of his pictures. Again like his music, he was able to carry any style and do it well. This book celebrates Jeffs life as "Jeff" the friend and loved one, not from an authors perception of the stories, but rather from the people in which Jeff dearly loved and who loved him as well. Not only will this book give you the insite to who Jeff truely was, it will also take your eyes on a visual joyride as well.

Essential for all the right reasons,

This book offers everything that a photo album should have with commentary that gives it a genuine family-like insight about what matters even more than his music - who Jeff Buckley is as a person.
I became immersed, chin in hands with my coffee and was completely drawn in. The people who mattered in his life provide honesty about his heart, soul and creative process which only gave me a deeper respect for Jeff as a person and as a musician. I also learned alot about myself in the process and how similar we two are. (musician and person - but that's another story) Alongside the GRACE LEGACY EDITION, this book is a prized possession. Not in the glorified sense but in the quality sense. Just as YOUR own photographs and conversations might be. I highly recommend this book. I can only hope now that one day perhaps the right movie / documentary on his life will be witnessed. Cudos to Mary Guibert. Hold it true.

If you're expecting a lovely picture book, then this is the book for you. It is a display of pictures, which speak a thousand words about a much missed musical virtuoso. There are snippet stories from several of his friends, but nothing too profound.
Sadly, the layers of Jeff Buckley's talent were just being revealed when he tragically died. His music is lush, contemplative, emotional and full of life. This book is a loving demonstration of his too short life.

True fans of Jeff respect his music and appreciate the honest, open, and intriguing person he was. This book was created by a close friend of his and is not out to profit off of possible exploitation. It is rather a unique collection that celebrates the man and his life force: music. Buy this or borrow it, just please cherish it. I do.
