Book Description

October 1996 4 and upP and up
In Ruth Tiller's eloquent and imaginative poem, ordinary scenes of a walk in the park become magically transformed by the power of wishing. The speaker finds several "magic" objects - a penny, a star, a wishing well - and wishes for everything from a fantastical fountain where stone dolphins come to life, to a marvelous climbing tree that welcomes you to its branches. The fanciful illustrations are perfectly suited to the lyrical verse in this innovative, breathtaking book.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Peachtree Press publishes one of the widest ranges of all smaller presses. This book alone attests to that. While advertised as a children's book, Wishing proves insightful, poetic, and entertaining enough for adults as well. The stunning illustrations include objects to wish upon as you read (and who doesn't need a wish from time to time?), and the text holds layer upon rich layer of colorful metaphors that literally paint the day "as bright as butter, / a red bandanna day, / with fat balloons bobbling on breezes/ and pigeons sailing so high/ they're specks of pepper in the sky." A great read for the child in everyone.

Review

"You will be Wishing... that there were more pages to this book. Readers take a flight of whimsical fantasy as author Tiller tickles the imagination. Shades of real connect with the surreal in Debrah Santini's rich illustrations.... Read it with a special youngster and add your own dreams." --Richmond Times-Dispatch
"While advertised as a children's book, Wishing proves insightful, poetic, and entertaining enough for adults as well.... A great read for the child in everyone." --Small Press

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, December 20, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Wishing (Hardcover)
I found this book while shopping for my daughter. It whispered to me that I should buy it for the man I love -- the same man that I was afraid to tell how I felt. I tried to put it back three times and every time it psst'ed at me to pick it back up. All the way out, I told myself it was for my daughter, but I got courageous and gave it to him anyway. He now views it as one of his prized possessions. It is a book for all of us who have wished for someone to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book, August 6, 2003

This review is from: Wishing (Hardcover)
In 1997, I met a woman who was everything I could ever have dreamed of having. Late in that year, she gave me this book as a very early Christmas gift, saying it had "whispered to her" as a way to tell me how she felt, when she could not bring herself to say the words.

It said far more than I could have dreamed of her telling me: Of wishes, hopes, dreams. It is a book I think of when I think of her.

This year, six years after we met, we will finally be married. I wish everyone could see within these pages the hope, love and beauty that we have found in each other, expressed in wishes in a book.
