Book Description

9 and up
For as long as he can remember, Robbie has always received special presents for his birthday. When he doesn’t get a special present on his tenth birthday, he grows angry and makes a far-fetched wish on a falling star. When his wish comes true, Robbie quickly discovers himself separated from everything he has ever known, in a dangerous world he has only dreamed about.

In this memorable tale, author Rita Salter creates an out-of-this-world fantasy for Robbie, who wakes up to find that he is a newborn Brontosaur. Confused and afraid, Robbie must learn how to adapt to his new surroundings in order to survive in this dangerous world. He seeks comfort from an older Brontosaur, Bronella, and companionship from Saura, both of whom remind him of his friends and family back home.

Together, Robbie and his new friends struggle to survive against the Terrible Ones, a vicious group of meat-eating dinosaurs led by the ferocious T-rex Tyra. As Robbie’s plan unfolds for the final standoff with Tyra, he must decide if he is willing to risk losing his life for the sake of his friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be careful what you wish for..., February 17, 2005
This review is from: The Wishing Star (Paperback)
This book by first-time author Rita Salter is great stuff. A child's casual wish comes true as he awakens to find himself in a new land--and new body! If you have kids who are fans of the "Land Before Time" movies, you need to buy this one for them. Rita's writing is full of colorful descriptions, detailed characters, and a great story. I'm looking forward to the next book by this talented author. Let's see who else can wish on "The Wishing Star"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Lesson For Anyone To Learn, May 11, 2005
By
FRENCH CRITIQUE (BHAM, ALABAMA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wishing Star (Paperback)
The author's first stab at children's literature is a successful attempt at demonstrating that not only can a child wish for more than he can handle but also that an adult can remember lessons learned in childhood about the feelings of want and selfishness. The book has worth for children as well as for adults. Everyone can find something in the story to make the experience a satisfying one. The concept that a demanding child can develop into a mature individual over receiving a bump on the head is a parent's dream come true. The ending has a surprising and well developed twist. A good book all around.
