If Wishes were Fishes...,
By Marc Ruby™ "The Noh Hare™" (Warren, MI USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy Fulfilled (DVD)
I think one of the divine laws of filmmaking is that no theme lasts forever. Thus 'Wishmaster 1' was novel and interesting, then the producers added some sex and more special effects and created 'Wishmaster 2,'etc., etc. Of course, each step of the way, the plot becomes a bit more repetitious and diluted. I picked up 'Wishmaster 4 - The Prophecy Fulfilled' more out of curiosity than from any hope of seeing a blockbuster horror film. And for the first 30 minutes I got exactly what I expected, same old, same old....Lisa (Tara Spencer-Nairn) is the attractive operator of a lingerie shop whose marriage is about to self-destruct. Her husband Sam (Jason Thompson) is deeply embittered by a motorcycle accident that took away his ability to walk or take an active role in the marriage. Worse, the couple has been completely frustrated in their attempts to achieve a financial settlement. Their lawyer, Verdel (Michael Trucco), has been working at no charge, or they would have had to give up long ago. Verdel, however, has a strong yen for Lisa. When a broken present reveals the jewel of the Djinn, the formula is complete. In no time at all the Djinn (John Nowak) permanently borrows Verdel's face, and sets about granting Lisa's wishes. For those of you who are newcomers, fulfilling the third wish will free all the Djinn from their imprisonment and let them take over the earth. Much to my surprise, only a third of the film was gone when the old standard plot was exhausted and the I suddenly realized that I was on the verge of finding out what happens when the lady actually makes the wish number three. Not satisfied with just one new plot twist, Director Chris Angel pulls a few more out of his hat to rescue a film that initially seemed utterly unremarkable. Not that this would ever set any box office records, but it has its moments. And excitement junkies will be glad to know that it earns its R rating. After four times at bat, actor John Novak has his part down pat, and the others are competent if uninspired. So if you are looking for something light to have with the popcorn, this might be just what you wished for.

I'm not a huge fan of horror movies, but I HAD to get this one, since it has Victor Webster from Mutant X in it. It came out in England a few months ago, so, nerd that I am, I bought a multi region DVD player just so I could watch it! lol Well, this and Mutant X which comes out on DVD in England TOMORROW! Yay!As for Wishmaster 4, it was MUCH better than I thought it would be! The picture quality was excellent, the acting was good, and so were the special effects/makeup. Since I never saw the first 3, I don't understand why Hunter (Victor's character) was only woken after the second wish was made, and why he wasn't (I assume) woken in the other movies. Victor looks PHENOMENAL in this, but his part was WAY too short, boo hoo. Liked the special effects on his voice as well. The fight scene between him and the Djinn was good, but again, too short. Would have liked to have had some extras on it, as it's just the movie, but ah well... Would have given it another star if it had extras, and another if it had more Victor! lol Hey, what can I say, I love the guy... :)

If you are looking for an absolutely horrendous sequel to the Wishmaster this is it. I haven't seen the third installment of wishmaster but thought the first two with the original actor who played Wishmaster were great. I picked this sequel up figuring it was wishmaster and wouldn't be that bad...boy was I wrong. It was like a mix between Power Rangers and Japanese Anime/old-school Godzilla. Not only is the acting horrible but the story is too. What happened to the good quality old school horror that was good even if the story was horrible it was a decent movie worth seeing...the Prophecy Fullfilled is not and I will say DO NOT waste your mney...it is disappointing.

A lot better than the 3rd installment, but still as stupid and as gory as ever. 1 star for horror, 5 stars for comedy drama. The Djinn falls in love with a human. The prophecie isn't forfilled, she just makes a 3rd wish. It's a better story than all of them, but still is pretty lame. Worth a rent.

...I'm just advising people to stay away from this if you can't handle gore, because even though there isn't that much, it's still pretty graphic when there is, so if you're a person with weak constitutions, skip this. But if you're want to see a good Wishmaster movie for once, and one that doesn't rely on gore, then I say go for it.

The first two Wishmasters were excellent horror movies. I bought part 3 but have to get it. I got this movie before the third, so I watched it right away. The speical effects are good, gore is decent but still good, but the story sucks. It kind of reminded me of Highlander with the sword fighting and then giving the Djinn humour wasnt a good idea. Still enjoyable to watch. The speical features are pretty cool on the dvd. The even have a Q and A with the Djinn about dating. Yea, I dont know what to say about it. I highly enjoy the Wishmaster series. I wonder why it never caught on with an audience. Hope for a fifth, although its been a few years.

"Only Wishmaster film worth seeing...",

...P>The acting was very good, actually. Michael Trucco was excellent as Steven Verdell, the lawyer, especially after demonic Djinn (John Novak) possessed him. I'd give the most credit, though, to John Novak. He did an excellent job as the Djinn, though I don't think this one has any special name for himself like Demerast (Andrew Divoff) in Wishmasters 1 and 2. I'm getting a little sick of the Wishmaster movies always focusing on blond women (all except WM2, her hair was black). And what scares me the most is that Lisa from this movie and Diana from the previous both have the same hair-do. The acting was, overall, great. 'Nuff said. The death scenes were awesome. I liked when the Djinn fought that buff guy right outside a strip club, impaling him on a metal bar and then throwing him into a dumpster (which was a very cheap effect, but not enough to take away any stars) and then saying, "Now is it Mondays and Wednesdays, or Tuesdays and Thursdays?" I like how the fellas at Artisan gave the Djinn sort of a sense of humor. The scene where that Doug guy was practically peeling his face off while he signed that document was pretty graphic, I just have one complaint about it. In that scene, the Djinn telepathically forces Doug to cut his nose off, but when he signes the papers, he still has his nose, and the only thing wrong with it is that it's bloody. The scripting was excellent. The lines were basically flawless, and what's better is that the characters really executed their roles seriously, letting every line slide smoothly out, making it sound so natural, but I guess this sort of ties in with my review on the movies acting. Oh well. The Djinn's lines were clever and witty and some points. I have nothing bad to say of the acting or the scripting. Well, that's all. This movie got 4 stars because of the three complaints I had: the cheap throw effect, the nose severed but still on face, and the fact that for the third time the Wishmaster films have focussed on a single blond woman. However, in this film, unlike all the others, the main character did not bother to look up the Djinn or anything like that, but in an installment like this there's really no need. I strongly recommend Wishmaster: The Prophecy Fulfilled to any casual horror or Wishmaster fan.

Master of the house, keeper of the inn,

You're not walking down the street with me and my daughter looking like that. Hello all, it's your B loving friend Sid here to ram you with yet another review. Don't want another review? Well we're not used to that but that's fine, you're getting one anyway. Being huge fans of the B horror the 90's had to offer we obviously were impressed with the 1997 release of Wishmaster. It was right on par with the low budget goodness we've come to love and require as a weekly occurrence. Like most movies they just don't know when to quit, hence the fourth installment. However in the films defense it was not nearly as bad as some think. If you look at the movie as it's own entity you will not be disappointed. Sure it's nowhere near as good as the original...but get over it. It's B plain and simple. You have to go into it looking for laughs to find the real beauty behind the movie.
In our fourth and final installment the wishmaster is unleashed by a big shot lawyer and one of his clients named Lisa. Lisa's boyfriend Sam has been handicapped due to an accident and they're going for the big bucks in a lawsuit. See Sam and Lisa used to be real sex maniacs and have been adversely affected from the accident. Since Sam has lost the use of his mandelbaum he has no will to live. Even when the wishmaster scores them 10 mil, he still acts like a little Mary. Sure we can sympathize with the man, Sid wouldn't know what to do if his mojo was out of commission. But this guys just too much. All he does is obsess over the thought his old lady is going downtown with the lawyer. So naturally the wishmaster kills the lawyer, takes over his body, and winds up tormenting the couple by seducing Lisa and mind whiching Sam left and right. A lot of other stuff happens but it'd take way too long to explain. Wishmaster IV had all the key elements to a solid B horror performance. It was a noce touch that they attempted to sprinkle in a little Wishmaster romance throughout the film. They do this by making the Wishmaster fall in love with Lisa while "can I borrow a feeling" plays in the background. It doesn't work on any level, but was certainly entertaining. In all honestly you really pull for Wishmaster throughout the movie since that Sam guy is such a toolbox. You actually want him to score with Lisa so you can say "shut up dumba** you didn't score, I scored with both of them." Not to mention numerous rack shots by Lisa which were top notch. That always slaps a couple extra cans to the scoreboard. Look at the scoreboard, it's chaos! So for the enjoyers of B out in the world we could easily recommend Wishmaster 4. It's not mind blowing but is absolutely worth the watch.

A woman (with an amazing rack) accidentally releases a demon into the world. He helps her with some legal matters and wants her soul in return, but first he'll give her three wishes.
It's a no-brainer movie that is fun if you take it for what it is. |
