Book Description

October 11, 1994
Rose Priestess Sylah's successful quest for ancient knowledge had shattered the unity of the Church and branded her a witch. Her only protection, and the only hope for a better future, lay with Gan Moondark, ruler of the united Three Territories. But Gan's fledgling empire was beset by enemies on all sides: Church wanted to reassert her traditional control and suppress the knowledge revealed by Sylah's quest. The heretic religion called Moondance was sweeping across the land, unstoppable, and its goal was the utter destruction of Gan and Sylah. And the deadly coastal raiders called the Skan were banding together with both Church and Moondance against Gan and Sylah in the hope of a rich plunder of slaves taken from Gan's lands.
As the winter set in, Gan had but months to plan for the defense of his people. And so once again he turned to the strangers--resurrectees from the twentieth century--who had helped him found his empire, for it was only with the technology of a long-dead civilization that Gan could hope to overcome the forces arrayed against him. But the skills and knowledge that the strangers possessed were feared even by Gan's supporters--and if his people began to believe that the strangers practiced dark magic, Gan's campaign for freedom would be doomed from the start...

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Set in a distant, postnuclear future where warring tribes strive to survive in the devastated remains of the American West, this concluding volume in a trilogy follows the progress of Rose Priestess Sylah and war leader Gan Moondark as they attempt to bring hope to their followers. Despite the opposition of a Church that has outlawed the pursuit of knowledge, Gan and Sylah face marauders and mad cultists so as to create a new culture out of the ruins of the past. Fans of military sf as well as epic adventure will appreciate the vividly detailed dark future that has so skillfully been brought to life

From Booklist

This superior novel concludes the trilogy begun in Warrior (1990) and continued in Wanderer. The title character is the Rose Priestess Sylah, who still seeks ancient knowledge to enhance the power of the enlightened post-Holocaust despot, Gan Moondark. Both characters remain dependent on the twentieth-century technology of revived Holocaust survivors, but Gan's numerous enemies and even his friends are beginning to use this connection against him. The book features plenty of action, a large cast of well-drawn characters both old and new, and an increasingly impressive command of language. McQuinn has conceived on such a large canvas that he probably has not painted it entirely in just three books. At any rate, further work in the same mold from him will definitely find readers among aficionados of intelligent action-sf. Roland Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific book, terrific series - but when is the next one?, April 30, 1998
This review is from: Witch (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a most enjoyable book with great characters, a terrific plot and premise. Howevever it has been a long time since it was published with no sequel date. It would be very disappointing to find that the author has abandoned this series without some definitive conclusion.
