Interesting Novel,

This review is from: Witch (Mass Market Paperback)
When Holly Cathers's parents are killed in a rafting accident, she's forced to leave her life in San Francisco, and take off to Seattle, where she has to live with her aunt Marie-Claire, and her twin cousins, Amanda and Nicole. But soon, Holly's grief turns into curiosity, and fascination, for strange incidents begin to occur. The main one being that any desire that she whispers to her cat seems to come true, and for some reason she has an undeniable attraction to a boy she hardly knows. Not to mention that her friend is attacked by a vicious falcon in a freak accident. Now Holly, Amanda, and Nicole are entering a world filled with secrets, ancient magics, and possession, rule.Being a fan of Nancy Holder's work with the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER series, and Debbie Viguie's MIDNIGHT PEARLS, I felt that I had to read this book. Holly is a fun character, who is spirited, and intelligent, and her cousins Amanda and Nicole are equally fun and interesting. The book in itself was very intriguing, and well written. This is a must for all fans of Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie. Erika Sorocco

Feuding Witch Families,
By Jon Weber (IL, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Witch (Mass Market Paperback)
'Witch' is the start of a wonderful new 'Wicked' series co authored by Nancy Holder featuring Holly Cathor, a senior in high-school who does not yet know that she is part of a very old line of very powerful witches. The story unfolds when Holly's parents are killed in a rafting accident and Holly is forced to move to Seattle to live with her aunt and two twin cousins. Through a series of strange incidents and flashbacks we learn that Holly's ancient family has been part of a feud with another demonic line of witches, the Deveraux's, currently lead by Michael along with his two sons. If witches, warlocks, and the supernatural are for you, then you are sure to enjoy this first entry in this series.

holly's life is turned upside down when her parents and her best friend are killed in a rafting accident. she is sent to live with an aunt and twin cousins that she did not even existed. unknown to her and her cousins they are descended from a long line of witches and their arch nemesis, the devereaux clan is watching all these events with growing concern. for there is a blood feud between the families that dates back 600 years and the devereaux clan has sworn to get bloody revenge. this book puts books like charmed to the point of looking like nice reading material for your children at bedtime. it has blood, reincarnation, murder, all the dark works ofevil that you could ever ask for. i can't wait till i read the next book.

I loved this book! Although I do have to admit it got a little confusing in some places. It kept me reading untill 4:00 in the morning (really it did!) This book has a great plot for all you "sweep" fans out there. Its about a girl, Holly, whos parents and best friend are killed in a rafting accident and she is sent to live in Seattle with an aunt she doesent even know. What she finds in Seattle is mystery. Things start happening to her that she can't explain. And then she meets this hottie at the local hang out and they are drawn to one another for a reason they can't explain (yet). and that is really where things start pickin up. You really have to pay attention in the end and put 2 and 2 together so pay attention! It makes sense if you do. Overall I thought it was great and I can't wait to read the next one.

It is not often that I actually stop and admire an image in a book. I usually appreciate imagery but I'm not one to ruminate on it. However, when I read "Clouds like decomposing gray fists" I just had to stop and enjoy the vivid picture that Holder and Viguie had painted in my mind's eye. From that moment on, the book ran much like the rapids it begins on. I literally could not put it down (I nearly got in trouble for taking such a long lunch). I thought it was an intelligent read, scary and suspenseful, without the overly nasty bits you sometimes get in horror novels. WITCH hit me from just about every side, I cried, I got angry, I laughed (out loud, it was kind of embarrassing, people stared), I was hopeful only to have my hopes dashed and then re-kindled then dashed...you get the picture. I even nearly had a heart attack at least twice. The tapestry of past and present was incredible as the characters took form and the history unfolded. The characters come alive and just when you think you have it figured out...you don't. I always appreciate it when a book surprises me and WITCH managed to pull off a few twists that even I didn't expect. My only complaint is that I have to wait for book 2!!!!! :) Well done.

I bought this book on a vactaion becaue I had finished a different book and had nothing to read. Which for me is a very bad thing cause all I do is read.Holly is having the time of her life river rafting on a vacaction with her parents, Tina(best friend), and guide Ryan. A storm starts up and the raft is destroyed leaving Holly the only survivor of the raft. With her best frien'ds mom in the hospital Holly goes to livein Seattle with her Aunt Marie-Claire and her twins Nicole and Amanda. Also in Seattle lives Micheal Deveraux and his two sons Eli and Jer. They are a line of powerful warlocks tryint to bring about the Black Fire. They are also tryin to forge an alliance between them and a line of Wiccans, the Cahors(who became the Cathers). The Cathers women are none other then Holly's family. However they do not know of their heritage. Another storyline is invovled in this book. It is about an alliance between the two familys. Isabeau and Jean are lovers and married. However each is supposed to decive the other and kill the family. Something goes wrong and all does not go according to plan. As soon as Holly is with Jer they are in their past lives(as Isabeau and Jean). All to quickly Holly and her cousins learn of what they are and who the Deveraux's are. Two stories both trying to win the readers attention. Both stories very very real. I loved this book and can't wait for curse. However I'm still unclear as to what Black Fire is and why it's so important.

read it 20 times,
This review is from: Witch (Mass Market Paperback)
this is one of my favorite books that i've read literally at least 20 times. it starts with holly cathers parents and best friend dieing in a rafting accident. holly decides to live with her best friends mother now that they both had nobody. barbara was attacked by a bird and was put into a coma the day of the funeral. holly then had no where else to go other than to go live with her aunt that she never knew existed. in seattle holly begins noticing weird things happening, her aunt and cousin casting spells, a weird connection/attraction to a guy she just met, her new cat growling at air, and michael deveraux. i highly recommend this book to anyone who craves a little imagination and suspense.

Make sure when you buy this book that you have time enough to read the whole thing in one sitting. You won't be able to put it down! Witch is a very exciting read! The pace and tone of the book was set right away by the foreboding poem at the beginning of the first chapter. I got involved right away in the rich array of characters that were deftly intertwined throughout the book. The imagery and flashbacks were magnificent! This book was suspenseful and scary without being too much over the top. I can't wait for the next installment of the book due to come out in January to see what happens!! |
