5.0 out of 5 stars Open minded, down to earth people will love this book :)
This book is a wonderful book for children. It encourages children to be open minded, loving and accepting of all people and all religions. There are a few stuffy individuals out there who wouldn't approve of their children loving all people, even those of Pagan traditions, but then, what would Jesus do? :)

3.0 out of 5 stars a good start...
if you are trying to stem the tide of public opinion about witches (to your child). Although I don't particularily like the depiction of the witch having a black house and sleeping upside-down like a bat, Bridwell DOES depict her as a good person and that counts for something. You may have to discuss with your child what spells are really all about, however.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book for Both Children and Adults, December 4, 1998
By
This review is from: The Witch Next Door (Paperback)
This book will always hold a special place in my heart since it was the first book I read all by myself. I was thrilled to find it still available after all these years. As a child, I found this book entertaining. As an adult, I find it enlightening. It deals with the serious subject of prejudice in a manner which, though not heavyhanded, is effective. I am glad to now be able to share this book with my own child.

What a pleasure to have a charming, funny, positive witch as a main character. My son loves this book. I'm happy to read it to him again & again because of the underlying lessons of acceptance and celebration. Thank You Mr. Bridwell! Blessed Be!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must read for all ages, October 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Witch Next Door (Paperback)
As a practicing and public Witch, I give many copies of this book away each year in an effort to dispell negative steroypes about my people and about my religion. I suggest the parents read it to themselves first, and internalize the message. Then read it to the kids for a lot of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars An old favorite is still pretty cute!, May 24, 2002

This review is from: The Witch Next Door (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book as a kid, and my kids love it now. Ever wished you had magical powers? What would you do with them? Well, the message of this book is that we should all try to help each other get along, even if we have magical powers. The kids love their neighbor, because she's friendly and nice. There are a series of books about the witch and they all involve fairness, friendliness, and good humor. Even when the witch confronts prejudice and gets angry, she doesn't get mean. She solves the problem in the nicest way possible.

These books are written by the author of the Clifford books, and just like Clifford teaches us about being good neighbors and getting along, these books have the same message. And they use magic as well! Pretty cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars A profound story disguised as a funny kid's book, January 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Witch Next Door (Paperback)
This is supposedly a childrens story, but The Witch Next Door (by the author of Clifford the Big Red Dog) is my favorite book, and I'm 35. It's a morality tale with a twist (and considerable subtlety). Must reading for kids of all ages.

One of my favorites as a kid, this book holds up well 25 years later. It's a short, magical story of friendship and acceptance that I'm thrilled to pass on to my children! Highly recommended for children of all ages.

This was one of my favorite books as a child, and I still have my very battered original copy. A wonderful story of acceptance.

5.0 out of 5 stars The point of the story, May 30, 2005
This review is from: The Witch Next Door (Paperback)
It was not the author's point to show the public that witches are good people (they are BTW)! But the reason the stereotypical portrayal of the with was actually supposed to be the depiction of an African American. To show young readers that any kind of hate is wrong. Much like the "Christian" reviewer who thinks it is wrong to teach kids that Pagans are in fact good people. Maybe she should look inside herself once in a while!

4.0 out of 5 stars what a great book for ALL kids!, June 1, 2001
By
Tracey (Oxford, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Witch Next Door (Paperback)
My four year old LOVES this book. It is the first book that he can actually "read". And what a great lesson of acceptance of those that differ from the norm. The very people that complain about the "witch" in this book are the very ones that could certainly use the lessons of acceptance and caring that it offers. But the book doesn't have to be about messages and lessons--it can just be a fun read for your kids!!
