Adventure AND humor,
This review is from: Witch queen of Lochlann (A Signet Science Fiction) (Mass Market Paperback)
Here's a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek adventure fantasy from the golden age of paperback originals, the late 1960s/early 1970s. Our hero, Dufus January (love that name), longs to live life in a fantasy world. He mistrusts technology, the banality of modern life, and obviously should have been born elsewhere & elsewhen. Besides, he's got the muscles & agility a true warrior would require in such a world!
But when he gets involved with two very sexy sisters, he suddenly discovers that there *is* another world, one where magic works & warriors do battle with monsters & wizards -- and he's swiftly transported there, to ensure that the proper queen is put on the throne of Lochlann, for only the proper queen can wield the magic that will save the kingdom. But which of the two sisters is the legitimate heir to the throne? The story is narrated in a slangy first person, sounding almost like a pulp detective novel. Dufus is sharp enough to realize that he's bit off more than he can chew, and he realizes the horrible consequences of choosing the wrong sister. But he's also the sort of hero he always dreamed of becoming, willing to fight & willing to lay down his life if necessary (although he'll try almost anything else before going that far). If you're looking for genuine entertainment, with a dollop of humor thrown into the adventure, then you should check out this delightful little gem. Recommended!

Book Description:
BEYOND THE NIGHT... BETWEEN THE WORLDS The Fomorians needed their queen. Lochlann was in peril. If the true royal leader did not appear before the festival, the watery abyss would swallow Lochlann, and the Children of Llyr, with their sharkskin armor and savage ways, would overrun Caer Rigor and the wheel of light would never look on the faces of the people again. But two princesses claimed the throne - one fair of hair, one raven-tressed; one cursed with a desire for human men, who died at her touch, the other blessed by a love urge inspired by a goddess - and Duffus January, their silently avowed protector, knew he would ultimately have to choose between them. Yet in the strange nether world where those who would have the Power also had an evil duplicate, Duffus realized he would never know if he made the wrong choice - for the final darkness would leave no time for reason... About the Author: George H. Smith (1922-1996) was an American science fiction author. He is not to be confused with George H. Smith, a libertarian writer, or George O. Smith, another science fiction writer. |
