Taking place in the span between the novels Witch & Wizard (2009) and The Gift (2010), this graphic-novel interlude continues the story of magical siblings Whit and Wisty as they navigate a world (and various underworlds) taken over by the evil dictator called “the One.” The book kicks off with a fantastic “story so far” synopsis—a one-page government document embellished by the siblings’ sarcastic edits that sets the serious/snarky tone carried through the rest of the adventure. And it is indeed serious in parts: the Shadowland, a place where ghosts reside, is being invaded by evil adults, and the resulting battles feature actual deaths (although the impact is ameliorated by the dead’s instant transformation into helpful spirits). Santos’ art favors overhead views, sharp angles, and oranges bright enough to wake any reader from doldrums. Meanwhile, Patterson’s preposterous plot and clunky good-bad divisions thrive when unattached to ugly prose; in fact, readers might do well to start the series right here. Grades 6-9. --Daniel Kraus

I have both the original book by Patterson and then this cartoon. The cartoon follows with the plot of the original book quite well. The quality of the print is excellent. It would not have to be so expensive shiny paper print, but it was readable and the plot was easy to follow even if it was a cartoon made after the original book. The illustrators were not the best of the best, but they were still good. If you like cartoons, then this is your book.
The word cartoon is used here even if it has had various different meanings since the Renaissance. In 19th century it referred to humorous strips but that is not the meaning of the word I use here. It means a graphic medium in which images convey a sequential narrative. I did not use a word graphic novel intentionally, because that word used to mean a hard cover format of a comic strips published in a form of a book.
This is a novel published as a series of images telling a similar story as in the fiction book.

James Patterson is a fantastic writer of adult books, who knew he could also keep a young boy engaged in a book for more than 5 minutes! My 11 year old son got this new series Witch and Wizard, he loved the book so much he made me and his grandmother read it. It was action packed and held my attention the entire way through...I finished it in less than 2 days! This is a must read not only for young adults, but us old folks also! We have already ordered the next 2 books!
