The Perfect Witches Almanac,
By
This review is from: Witches' Almanac 2003 (Witches' Almanac: Complete Guide to Lunar Harmony) (Paperback)
I am pleased to say that this is exactly what I was looking for in an Almanac -- something that simply tells me the phases of the moon, important dates, etc. with other charming articles, poems, and artwork for my reading and viewing pleasure. No irritating fluff thrown in there like in the Llewellyn Almanacs, just straight to the point information and articles worth your time. The reason this almanac is a dollar more expensive is because it's the better almanac. Whether you're an experienced witch or you've only been one for a day, this almanac will help you keep track of things!

Witches should know this book but annual purchase unnecessar,
By NYC Webwitch (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Witches' Almanac (Spring 2001 to Spring 2002) (Paperback)
If you are a beginner, I would certainly get a hold of this book, if for no other reason than to make yourself familiar with what is and is not contained within, just for knowledge’s sake. This slight booklet consists of a small number of brief poems, recipes, tips, and articles from witches around the world, all concerning historical and practical points of interest relating to the craft. While I, personally, find some of this information interesting, on the whole, I would not consider this work a stimulating read, nor an excessively useful reference. Though the three to four page explanation of the lunar cycles is quite useful to the beginner, this is something that is contained every year, so, for this, it need not be purchased annually. I have found the horoscope to be moderately accurate every year, however. I guess what I’m saying is that, by the time you buy this book, and possibly pay shipping for it, if you may not find more than four or five pages of particular use and interest, it may not be worth it. On the other hand, it is not excessively expensive, and some people with different interests than I might find this work fascinating. Decide for yourselves. Pick up this year’s! Please note, that if you are looking for an actual “daily almanac”, you are much better going for Llewellyn’s Magical Almanac, which actually provides day to day report of moon cycle, planetary alignment, suggested incenses, colors, etc.

This review is from: The Witches' Almanac: The Complete Guide to Lunar Harmony: Spring 2000 to Spring 2001 (Paperback)
I absolutely adore this little "book" and look forward to it every spring for the new year. It is chock full of little tidbits and lore that is an absolute delight to peruse with its "woodcut" graphics that are detailed and lovely.First of all, there is always a section on what's been happening in the news and the news always has to do with something metaphysical or spiritual. For instance, one passage had new information on "Nessie" the Lock Ness and the second had interesting speculation that an armor dealer in Italy had possibly found Joan of Arc's suit of armor because it literally fit his 13-year-old girl. I love these little news clips because they are interesting and informative. There is always a republishing of a fairy tale of some sort and is usually the original form with an explanation of the moral. Otherwise, there are always various articles and information. For instance, one passage had to do with the mystical origin of "Scarborough Fair," by Simon and Garfunkel, one had information on the Egyptian God Set and his origin in Egyptian lore, one had recipes for "moon cookies" for a summer feast, another had information on the different moons and what they represent, another had information on the superstition of the black cat throughout history and how the U.S. is the only one that regards it as bad luck, the list is various and endless... but one thing is for sure: it's an almanac and it reads like one; informative, advising and entertaining. Also, there is always a detailed two-page spread on each horoscope for the year as well as a weather almanac (which I find disturbingly accurate, I must confess,) as well as moon phases and a calendar for the entire year with advice for certain days, famous people's birthdays and moon phases. This is a wonderful little book. I've read criticism towards this book for the price in regards to the size, but there is NO external advertising. That is, there's no ad in the back to call LaToya's Jackson's stupid psychic hotline. Ads such as these usually litter metaphysical newsletters/almanacs in order to help pay for the costs of the book and it is refreshing to have a collectible without them. Ever see a woman's fashion magazine? Notice how 3/4 of it is just advertisements? Ever wish there weren't any? That's what this is. In other words, I'd rather pay the extra bucks to see it without them. Also, this is from an independent publisher (ahem...Witches' Almanac, Inc.) which is why it's a couple of bucks extra. I've been collecting these almanacs for years. They also have books of theirs that you can order through them such as herbal books, a book of "wisdom" for each day of the year, past issues of the almanac and reprints of them from the 70s as well as much, much more. This is a little treasure of a book that is wonderful to read. Check it out at your bookstore and you'll love the content. High recommendation for the serious practitioner, anyone who collects almanacs of various sorts and people who love history and folklore. A must buy for unique book collections.

so much better than Llewelyn . . .,

This is the first time I have read The Witches' Almanac - in previous years I have had the Llewelyn Magical Almanc -- This one is so much better! It has none of the sugar and fluff so common to Llewelyn and provides a great compilation of stories and lore. The calendars are in an easy-to-understand format and I particularly enjoyed the in-dept "year ahead" horoscopes. If you usually buy the Llewlyn Magical Almanac I strongly suggest you take a look at this one also - you may change your purchase habits !

I highly recommend these almanacs. I have been using them for many years. It includes lunar calendars for each cycle and many of the days include simple ideas for that day. There are always great lore and stories inside and the astrology predictions for the year for each sign have always been right on for me and those around me.

Each year I find myself purchasing the Witches' Almanac. I am not wiccan and have no intentions of being so, but I am drawn to it like a moth to the flame. Maybe it's just my Uranus wanting to shock the hell out of people who see me reading it on my lunch break!I always find the most interesting news articles and briefs in these publications that you never see on the local news. The poetry is always well worth the read and the calendar isn't half bad. Over all, don't expect any depth or real educational, but a nice little splurge and certainly not overpriced. |
