3.0 out of 5 stars It IS anamorphic
Contrary to the other review on this site, Witches of Eastwick (a movie I really love) IS in anamorphic widescreen. It's presented in it's original aspect ratio as well. What it isn't, however, is remastered. It sorely needs a full remastering of picture and sound.

This review is from: Witches of Eastwick [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Beautiful, intense, funny and outrageous horror film that mixes with the "toxic" humour of Jack Nicholson as the devil. Cher, Susan Surandon and Michelle Phiefer are excellent in their roles as three sexy women bored out of their mind by their lives, and wish for the perfect man to arrive. When a strange and mysterious man by the name of Darrell Van Horne arrives in their New England town, he bewitches the three friends and they come together as one and become their opposites, as this strange man entangles them into a world of magic, witchcraft, sex and food. When the girls realize that this man may be the devil in disguise, they take precaution and decide to rebel against him...that is until he finds out and their troubles get even worse. This film is wonderfully scored by John Williams (Jaws, Hook) and his music suits the film amazingly. The ending to me, as others have said the opposite, is totally fit for this film and those babies are very cute! All the actors and actresses involved, especially Jack Nicholson and four lead girls, are absolutely superb in their roles. Overall, I'd have to disagree with those reviewers and critics who say this is a bad movie. It is not...it's very riveting and funny, with thrills and chills mixed in with it. Devine entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wicked fun, January 27, 2007
I remember watching this movie on cable ages ago as a kid and I enjoyed it.Now as an adult I love it: Great acting, great dp work, story is funny, sexy, dark and sassy. Special effects are not bad at all considering it's a 1987 flick.
A strange man, apparently summoned by three frustrated women, shows up in a perfectly ordinary American town. He soon will change their lives for the better or the worse.Filled with magic, symbolism and detail, the movie catches our attention from the start.
However, like another reviewer pointed out, the only difference between this DVD release and the one from 1997 is the case. The image and sound are not bad but the movie hasn't been restored at all. Some scratches and white speckles are present throughout the film.
My advice is, if you own the 1997 version of this DVD don't waste your money buying this reissue...Unless you like the new cover better.

5.0 out of 5 stars They cast a spell on me.., February 17, 2001
This review is from: The Witches of Eastwick (DVD)
This film has an ensmble cast to end all ensemble casts.. what more could you ask for.. Jack nicholson as the devil.. Cher, Susan Sarandon, and (the impeccable) Michelle Pfiefer as three sultry sexy witches.. Darrel Van Horn comes to the town of Eastwick when he is summoned by three witches who have been scorned or hurt by the men they loved.. Cher Plays Alex, whose husband died and left her to raise a daughter by herself.. Michelle plays Suki, a newspaper journalist whose husband abandoned her because she got preganant all the time.. and Susan plays Jane, the divorced elemntary school music teacher.. Van Horn moves into each of their lives his own way and shows them the potential they always felt was there.. once the girls realize what is really going on, they exact their revenge.. A great, fun and Witty movie.. a must see..

4.0 out of 5 stars Woooooooohooo witchy women..., July 22, 2006

First of all, if you're going to see this movie, remember not to take it too seriously. It does touch on some serious subjects, and is of course meant to make you think, but above all, it's a COMEDY. It's silly and raunchy and FUN. Don't read too much into it.

That being said... This movie is great! If you're a fan of Sarandon, Cher, Pfiefer, or Nicholson, you'll probably like it. If you're a fan of all 4, you'll love it. There aren't any Oscar-calibur performances here, but you can tell the actors just had a lot of fun with their characters (which I always find entertaining).

Susan Sarandon's is the most fun to me, as she goes from super-dowdy to a free-spirited sexual being. And you've got to love Jack Nicholson being suave and evil as only Nicholson can be. Plus, Cher with huge infomercial hair!

Combine that with all kinds weird religious messages, and you've got yourself a movie!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Witches of Eastwick (DVD)
This movie is so great. It is about a man named Daryl Van Horn and these three girls named Alex, Sucky, and Jane. These three girls wanted a man to love and all that other stuff. Well this man came to them. After he came many strange things began to happen like many accidents and one death. These girls don't know at first that he is a warlock. Later the girls find out they are witches also. Watch the movie and you will be sure to love it!!!

Great fun. Luscious ladies join Jack Nicholson at his best. Wonderfully black, vicious, and sexy for a star packed Hollywood production.

What a brilliant movie. Enjoyable in every sence of the word. There is really something to please everyone in this film. George Miller's direction is right on the money. The Performances are all exceptional, there is not a bad actor in the whole film. Jack Nicholson does his best work ever! The scene in the church where he complaines about god and woman is still one of my favourite scenes on film. Said Woman are also exceptional. Susan, Michelle and Cher... Jack is one lucky man. An all-round perfect movie.

This is a great old classic (though not THAT old!) with three top-notch actresses and one hell of an actor playing the main roles in this film. The minor characters were also played well, and the story is entertaining. It's cool to see how these women are working together, rather than just fighting one another for the man's attentions, and learning powerful magic and spells along the way. I do feel that the ending was a bit cliched and it would be nice to have ended without all these babies cluttering things up, but otherwise this really is a wonderful film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Witches of Eastwick (Keepcase), January 25, 2010
Alex, Jane, and Suki are three bored New England women left to live without their husbands. They innocently conjure up a mystery man, who could satisfy all their desires. A new man moves into town - and he fits the bill perfectly. Daryl Van Horne is filthy rich and wild eyed, and within days the three women have all discovered almighty power within themselves. This movie is wildly imaginative and terrifically entertaining. With Jack Nicholson as the devil himself, things just don't get any better than that. Actually, the whole cast is very well-chosen and all give great performances. This movie is worth seeing.
