Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 From the author of Who Needs a Bratty Brother? (Lodestar, 1985) comes another story about Kelly and Ben McCoy. In this humorous Halloween tale, Kelly enlists the aid of two friends as they form a secret society of witches in order to cast a spell on snooty Rae Jean's Halloween party, to which they were not invited. The girls improvise on various magic spells with amusing and sometimes surprising results. A final attempt to crash the party yields a first kiss for Kelly, as well as a better understanding of unhappy Rae Jean. The topic of witches and their craft, in whatever form, holds great appeal for young readers, and the same will likely hold true here. Character development is fair, but the plot tends to get bogged downs in spots as the girls practice their witchly rituals. However, the pace does pick up toward the end. The final chapter leaves readers with a number of unanswered questions, but such a conclusion seems appropriate considering the tone of the story.
