Book Description

May 1, 2001 8 and up3 and upWitches' Chillers Series (Book 2)

A devastating fire, a rash of farm accidents, a poisoned apple and a woman's mysterious disappearance-what's happening at the Bindart Orchard? People keep secrets but ravens and rabbits bring messages-if you can decipher them. When Cricket Bindart asks Bethany for assistance, the Witches' Night Out coven is drawn into a dark harvest of danger. Do you dare to join them?

In this excerpt from Witches' Key to Terror, the harvest moon has risen, and magick is afoot. . .

Sixteen-year-old Cricket Bindart knew she was in deep trouble. The dead bunny dangling from the mailbox was a good indication, and the note attached to the limp animal only served as conclusive evidence. "You're fast, but I'm faster. . . "

A noise in the orchard made her heart kick into double-time. A tendril of autumn-spiced wind fluffed her long copper hair, splaying the ends across the lifeless form of the bunny. The skin on the back of Cricket's neck itched and she imagined that somewhere in those darkened woods someone was watching her. In defiance, she pulled the rabbit free of the mailbox and threw it into the woods.

There was a crash in the bushes. Cricket's eyes widened. From the exact place she had thrown the dead rabbit, a live one appeared, bursting from the thicket and tearing across the cornfield, full force toward the face of the moon.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-Bethany Salem is the leader of "Witches' Night Out," a small group of teen Wiccans. In the third book in this series, she and her coven solve the mystery at Bindart's Orchard: a missing migrant worker, dead rabbits, and a poisoned apple lead to no good. RavenWolf has created a standard mystery series with magick as the hook. Bethany and her friends cast spells, study astrology, and practice their healing and psychic abilities as they investigate the mysterious goings-on in their small New England community. They are like most teens in that they have crushes, love clothes, have jobs, and go to public high school. Though the writing is not top quality, the story and characters are interesting enough. Fans of the TV show Charmed will appreciate the book, as will the many teens who are interested or involved in the Wiccan religion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely pagan novel, June 4, 2008
This review is from: Witches' Key to Terror (Mass Market Paperback)
Meant for teens but this old lady read it and enjoyed it. And the day to day pagan aspects are blended in the story well and very realistic. But then Silver is a bit of an expert on her path of paganism. And she always writes with integrity, clarity, simplicity and honesty.

5.0 out of 5 stars The End to a Good Series, May 8, 2005
This review is from: Witches' Key to Terror (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed the Witches Chillers series by Silver Ravenwolf. Unlike things like the Church of Satan, she is really in touch with the younger people interested in the occult and is a lot more popular. I've seen criticism of the authore blowing off Christianity in a paragraph. Well that's cool. We no longer need God in our lives. This is a murder mystery and I liked the author's use of an almost no holds barred dialog. People are still afraid of witchcraft and this has that horror film feel to it. If you can get through the B movie dialog and aren't totally humorless you should like this book about new generation teen witchcraft. I give the author credit for some originality and her willingness to market the real occult at younger audiences, but this may all seem rather corny to the unitiated witch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, January 5, 2003
By
This review is from: Witches' Key to Terror (Mass Market Paperback)
I found this book quite entertaining. Readable, quick-moving, and fun. This book toned down the gratutitous death of the prior two -- enough to make it a murder mystery, not enough to kill people unnecessarily (as in NIGHT OF FEAR, near the end). It was also more believable than the ending of #1 and had a far better resolution to the actions and fates of the minor characters who WEREN'T the murderer. I look forward to reading the upcoming fourth book in the series.

As I've said before, this is a thriller series first, and a portrayal of life as a Wiccan teenager second. If you want realism, check out Isobel Bird's CIRCLE OF THREE. But as a murder-mystery, this is a fun one.
