Book Description

8 and upWitches Chillers
Here is the first in a new series of spellbinders written specifically for teens. Bethany Salem is a pretty normal 16-year old, except for one thing ... she's a Witch! When her boyfriend Joe dies in a mysterious car accident, she vows to find his killer. But when she calls on the magickal Hounds of the Wild Hunt to catch the murderer, the members of the Witches' Night Out coven get more than they bargained for. Will they catch Joe's killer in time, or will the killer catch them?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

RavenWolf, the author of a number of guides to Wiccan practice, kicks off the Witches' Chillers fiction series, starring the members of a high school coven. Readers eager to learn more about what RavenWolf calls "magick and the religion of Wicca" can witness rituals and spell-casting and also get a taste of Wiccan philosophy. To do so, however, it's necessary to navigate a tortuous plot involving murder, concealed identities, evil would-be stepmothers and nefarious conspiracies, and to tolerate B-movie dialogue ("By the deadly skirts of the Dark Goddess, it is you, you old hag, that should be struck down! May your Karma return to you!" the heroine shouts at her malicious English teacher). Ironically, this none-too-spellbinding novel concludes with directions for a spell, as will future series installments; it's hard not to wish a little magic were in the storytelling itself. Ages 12-up. (June)

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-Firmly set in the present, Witches' Night Out begins with one word-hate. This intense emotion is expressed by 16-year-old Bethany Salem, who vacillates between loathing, confusion, strength, and courage throughout this mystery. She has suffered tragic losses: her mother, and her boyfriend, who died in a car crash that everyone except Bethany believes was an accident. Before Joe's death, Bethany and her friends had met weekly to engage in magickal rituals for healing people, securing good grades, finding familiars, and more. Her father has recently proposed to Angela, who would like nothing more than to ship the teen off to boarding school. Now, Bethany will stop at nothing to discover why Joe died. With the exception of her dad, the typical, almost-nonexistent parent of YA literature, the novel has many colorful characters and lots of drama. Some of Ravenwolf's descriptions are extremely well executed and vivid. This novel is not for the faint of heart or for those who are uncomfortable with witchcraft. There is murder, suicide, and several spells that readers can attempt to practice. Written in the cliff-hanging format of R. L. Stine's "Goosebumps" series (Scholastic), this book will appeal to teens who enjoy a strong-minded heroine and have an interest in Wicca.

Like all the other fabulous books written by Silver this one ranks right up at the top. I recieved the book on Tuesday May. 2nd, and could not put it down till I was finished. It is both a Fantastic read and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is one of the best Fiction/Mystery Novels I have ever picked up.It blends Witchcraft and Mystery and puts you right there in the story. It is true what the Book conveys:"Night has fallen and Magick is afoot..." It is a must read for the Young and Old. Both thumbs up again to you Ms.Ravenwolf and keep up the Great work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Witches Night Out, May 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Witches' Night Out (Mass Market Paperback)
How do I love Silver Ravenwolf as a writer? Let me count the ways, but this is not one of them. Silver should stick to what she knows. This book lacked depth and plot. Her book beneath a Mountain Moon should be caterogized in the same manner, after 60 pages or so, I had to put it down; I just lost interest. However, her how to books on Wicca for adults and teens alike are exceptional. Her Teen Kit for witches is fantastic, I just wish there was one for adults. I also wish she would write an autobiography of her life and how she became a witch--these are the things that Silver is best at--not fiction. L.J. Smith is the author to read for young adult fiction, it has intrigue, suspsense mystery all rolled into one. Silver Ravenwolf is a teacher--the best when it comes to the Craft, but as far as writing fiction--she should leave that to someone else and write what she knows!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific new series debut!, April 17, 2000

This first entry in a terrific new young adult series raises the standard for series fiction. The diverse characters, the mystery to solve, and the touch of occult make it enticing. Somewhat like Nancy Drew, Bethany Salem lives with an eccentric housekeeper in a nice large home while her father (a NYC detective) is kept busy working in the city. She drives a red Camaro and has a circle of friends with whom she just happens to practice witchcraft. The emphasis on working toward good is very subltly entwined making it uplifting while not preachy. RavenWolf is a fine storyteller with exquisite pacing. Highly recommended.
