I've been a fan of the Hendees since they released Dhampir. I own the entire (to date) Noble Dead Saga, so when I heard Barb was coming out with her own side series I HAD to give it a look. And it doesn't disappoint. This is everything we've come to expect from anything written by Barb or J.C.!! Dark fantasy, mystery, adventure, everything is there!! Give it a look, but beware: You just might stay up past your bedtime!!

Personal note to the Hendees: Keep up the great work!

Célene and Amelie are hired by their prince to solve a mystery for him to impress his father. Célene can see a person’s future. And Amelie can see their past. Together they for a perfect team for solving mysteries.

Witches In Red is the sequel to last year’s Mist-Torn Witches, though is a standalone story. I’m thoroughly enjoying this new fantasy series with complex characters and relationships and interesting stories. As before, there is plenty of suspense, danger, intrigue, and a bit of romance. Barb Hendee’s novels are not to be missed if you’re a fan of the fantasy genre. I can say this as I’ve read all of them (and reviewed most). This latest installment was just as exciting and unpredictable as I’d hoped. And I impatiently look forward to the next.

I think Barb Hendee has created a series that is definitely going to live on throughout literary history. The characters are realistic the story lines flow to the point where the book cannot be put down. You see the growth of the characters from the first book in the series. She has thrown in some surprises that I have a feeling are going to take the story to a different place than I originally thought, and it's going to be interesting to see how the stories will play out in the long run. If you enjoy fantasy writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien and George R.R., Martin you'll definitely enjoy this book. I don't want to put any spoilers because it will ruin it for those reading this review, but I can say that I can't wait for the next book in this series! Bravo Mrs. Hendee!

5 Stars / Top Pick

Witches in Red is the second book in the Mist-Torn Witches series. I enjoyed this book so much. I didn't get a chance to read book one (The Mist-Torn Witches) in the series, but I do suggest other readers start with book one.

We start with two main characters, Amelie and Céline who are sisters. Both of them are very different and have different personalities. The book is in third person and the POV keeps going from one of them to the others. Once you get into the book a little, it's easier to keep them straight.

Celine is sweet, rather timid and has a tender manner. Amelie is the tougher of the two, the protector. She most often dresses down, usually in pants and she keeps her hair short. Amelie has been working on being more at ease with her abilities while Céline doesn't have a problem with them.

I've found that there is almost always a lot of romance in these types of books. But this book has more of what I would call strong feelings instead of romance. It's getting there, but not quite yet. I feel this gives the author room and time to develop the romance slowly instead of you turning the page and there's a full blown romance. It's sweet and charming when it is developed slowly.

The fantasy world they live in is very easy to understand without worrying about how something happened or why did that happen. I'm sure if I had read the first book, some of this book would have made more sense to me.

The authors write in such descriptive terms that you can almost see the castles and you can picture yourself wearing the clothing they wore then. The authors take a few words and make your imagination awaken. Witches in Red is a fairly quick read. It was easy to read and understand.

This was a fantastic read. Barb Hendee weaves a rich story with well-rounded characters. My only complaint is that I have to wait so long for the next book! I'd recommend this series as well as the Noble Dead books.

Witches in Red is the second book in The Mist-Torn Witches series. In addition, it takes place in the same world as The Noble Dead series, which I haven’t yet read. I do like that it’s the same world though so as I read the different series I will be more and more familiar with it. I do know that this series is absolutely fantastic and I definitely plan to read The Noble Dead books very soon!

Characters~ Sisters Amelie and Celine are fantastic. Celine felt a bit more in the forefront, but that might be my imagination. They were both the main characters though and their personalities came out even more in this book. They are both unique and stand apart from each other. It’s easy to know which is which and not confuse them even when the narration is switching between them (third person narration). Celene is the healer and has a soft and gentle nature. Amelie is the protector and more rough. She dresses in pants and keeps her hair shorter. They both have abilities and while Celene is more comfortable with hers, Amelie is learning to be more comfortable with hers.

Romance~ The romance in the series is so far really on the light side. We see that there are feelings between characters but as yet it’s still developing slowly and hasn’t yet become an actual romance. I like the slow developing romances, and I’m okay with this. It’s clear that there are feelings between characters and I’ll be anxiously awaiting the day it becomes more.

Plot~ In this book Celene and Amelie are taken to a miners camp where the soldiers guarding it are turning into beasts. Amelie and Celene are there to help figure out who, or what, is responsible. It’s a dangerous job but Celene and Amelie will do anything to save others.
