Book Description

10 and upBeatrice Bailey's Magical Adventures
This third in a series of magic and adventure novels, stars young Beatrice Bailey, apprentice witch, on another of her exciting adventures. The Witches of Sea-Dragon Bay takes Beatrice and her friends Cyrus, Ollie, and Teddy to a very unusual beach resort, where the waters are filled with sea serpents and monsters. As in the previous Beatrice Bailey novels, Beatrice is continuing on her mission to break the spell of Dally Rumpe, the evil sorcerer whose dark powers extend over many different realms. Beatrice and her friends travel in a hot air balloon to the eastern part of the Witches' Sphere, where Sea-Dragon Bay is located. Their balloon mysteriously deflates, and they need to be rescued by the Ghost Guard. Several other ordeals follow, all of them having mysterious causes. They include Ollie being trapped in a cellar flooded by rising tide, and Beatrice being stalked by an army of ferocious rats. Young readers will keep turning pages of this fast-moving tale, as Beatrice meets and overcomes a variety of mysterious and sometimes humorous challenges. (Ages 10-14)

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8--Beatrice, a 12-year-old apprentice witch, continues the quest assigned by the Witches' Executive Committee to determine her official magical rating. She must rescue a wizard's four daughters who have been imprisoned by an evil sorcerer in strongholds scattered throughout the enchanted country of Bailiwick. Having successfully liberated the first two captives in The Everyday Witch(2002) and The Witches of Friar's Lantern(2003, both Barron's), Beatrice, her three friends, and two newly assigned witches now travel to Sea-Dragon Bay, where Ailsa is confined in an off-shore castle guarded by fearsome sea monsters. The expedition faces numerous problems: the travelers' hot-air balloon crash-lands; one of the companions is nearly drowned in a flooded cellar; and Beatrice is trapped in a rat-filled dungeon. The friends suspect that one of the newcomers is in league with the enemy. Familiarity with Beatrice's previous adventures is helpful, but not essential, and a number of plot threads are left unresolved for later volumes. This book, like J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series (Scholastic), features young magic-users in training, an arcane world coexisting with the mortal sphere, a witches' hierarchy, and a villain who is regularly foiled but never completely defeated. Although Bailiwick isn't as fully realized a place as Rowling's Hogwarts, Forrester's title is worth consideration where fantasy is popular.--Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

5.0 out of 5 stars We see more of the world of magic thru Beatrice's adventures, November 10, 2004

This review is from: The Witches of Sea-Dragon Bay: The Adventures of Beatrice Bailey (Beatrice Bailey's Magical Adventures) (Paperback)
"The Witches of Sea-Dragon Bay" is the third book about the continuing struggles of Beatrice Bailey as she attempts to undo a curse placed on members of her family years ago. Having successfully undone the first two parts of the curse a couple months ago, Beatrice and her friends return to the world of magic to attempt to undo the third part. They stay with some of Beatrice's cousins and learn more of her family's history.

Dally Rumpe is the witch who placed the curse and has threaten to get Beatrice. Beatrice has to be careful, because Dally can change himself into other people. In getting to Sea-Dragon Bay, and at Sea-Dragon Bay, a number of dangerous mishaps occur. Beatrice and her friends don't know who to trust.

There are elements of danger in this story. Beatrice also has to struggle with a mean cousin. The world of magic provides a rich and detailed background.

The story is well written, and a fun read. In some ways this story has more background and depth that the first two stories. If you've enjoyed any of the other Beatrice Bailey books, you'll enjoy this book.
