3.0 out of 5 stars Alright read.
There's not much I can say about this book. It was just okay. If you don't like soulmate type books then this one probably won't appeal to you. Sara and Adam's relationship developed way too fast for my taste. One minute they're just lusting after each other, then the next Adam's turned from a gruff forest ranger to a big mushy lovestruck werewolf. The plot was alright, I...

This review is from: Witching Moon (The Moon Series, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
In the South Georgian small town of Wayland, a coven of witches waits to take their revenge. A hundred of year heritage of the town rising against their own who possess paranormal gifts has left a burning rage and determination for revenge. Led by Falcon, the coven plans to take revenge on the town whose citizens killed generations of parents and grandparents.

Adam Marshall comes to the Olakimpa swamp, a privately owned Nature's Refuge, to take the place of its previous ranger, Ken White, who was killed in an unsolved shooting. Soon after arriving, a mysterious scent leads the shapeshifter to witness a coven of witches cavorting in the moonlight. The powerful herbs cast on the fire mesmerize him until he must flee for his life with the coven in hot pursuit.

The next morning Adam returns to the site, to find a woman gathering herbs. Biologist Sara Watson researches the local fauna for commercial medicinal plants as part of an agreement between the swamp owner and Granville Pharmaceuticals. Shortly after her arrival in Wayland, Sara begins to have an awakening of her psychic talents - gifts she has repressed since she was four. As Adam and Sara struggle to control their mutual attraction they quickly find themselves joining efforts against danger as the coven targets them next.

Author Rebecca York pens an exciting read in WITCHING MOON. Adam's use of his shapeshifting abilities adds an unusual element to this police procedural even as his sensuality lends the romance delightful heat. Sara's struggle to reconcile her abilities with her determination to fit into the ordinary world leads to an intriguing internal struggle. Indeed, the characterizations, including wonderfully developed secondary characters, are the novel's greatest strength. While York's knowledge of Wicca seems superficial at best, and requires the reader to accept paranormal gifts as the sole definition of a witch, the cult's combined abilities do result in a riveting read. WITCHING MOON comes highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "howling" great time!!, December 8, 2003
This review is from: Witching Moon (The Moon Series, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Harlequin Intrigues were the "home" of York for a long time and she never failed to deliver a good read. But she really shines as she moves to "big books" for Berkley. This is third in the tense Moon series, and though maybe slightly weaker than the first two, it's only because of there is less surprise after the first two. The writing is compelling, the characters leap off the pages. This is paranormal romance at its best.

In this tale, Sara Weston is a botanist (a witch but denies her powers). She has come to the swamp to do research and this puts her into the territory of Adam Marshall. He is a ranger who patrols the Nature Refuge, but he is a very "special ranger". In the dark of night, mysterious fires are seen burning, but as Adam investigates he finds the fires have a drugging effect. Can he solve the riddle before it's too late?

As Adam and Sara find each other, they must fight the unseen that see that as being in the way. They must learn to accept who and what they are if they are to survive.

A "howling" great read!!

I could not put this book down!! I had to buy her other books in the Series, and just keep wanting to soak up more. If you pick this book up, you are in for a long night cuz you wont put it down until your finished. Rebecca York has the ability to sweep the reader into the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Atmospheric Werewolf Book, June 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Witching Moon (The Moon Series, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
The first one of Ms. York's books I read was Crimson Moon. Her take on werewolves intrigued me, so I went back and read the other books in the series. This one has some really interesting elements. I love the spooky backdrop of the swamp and the small town setting with its prejudices and hidden past. I love the idea that the waters of the swamp gave some of the townspeople psychic powers. And I love the way the author uses that as a jumping-off point to write about how people deal with their primal fears. She drops werewolf Adam Marshall into this churning mix of myth and buried secrets and stirs up a story of suspense, intrigue, and sensuality.

Quick read. Enjoyable if you like the genre, which I do. Mystery, the occult, fantasy, romance all rolled into one story. I have been reading the entire series. Stories are similar in tone, but characters and situations vary. So far the first one I read, "The Killing Moon" has been the best. All are good for a rainy day.

One minute they're just lusting after each other, then the next Adam's turned from a gruff forest ranger to a big mushy lovestruck werewolf. The plot was alright, I liked some aspects of it, but I think there could've been more about what exactly the witches powers were and maybe a bit more background to plot than there was. I'll probably attempt another of York's books in this series, because this book wasn't a horrible read. And I really liked her short story "Burning Moon" from the anthology "Cravings" which was set in the same world as this.

Then this book is titled appropriately. This book had more holes in it that swiss cheese and is just as stinky. The witches apparently cavort naked around a fire inhaling the smoke of some sort of plant, but the author never says what the plant is. Probably because it doesn't exist.

The level of detail given to Adam chaning into a werewolf and back is lacking, making it seem flat and unbelievable. He should have just gone through a revolving door like Superman used to and come out in wolf form.

The whole plot of adult children of persecuted witches returning to the town where their parents were run out is not believable. And the mental thunderbolts is just silly.

I had higher expectations for this book, which is the first I've read from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Werewolf and Witch Team Up to Fight an Evil Coven in the Swamp, December 11, 2005
By
Dakota "daxydakota" (Southern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Witching Moon (The Moon Series, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
If you like contemporary paranormal romances, you'll probably enjoy WITCHING MOON by Rebecca York, which involves a love affair between a werewolf and a witch. It's the third book in a series featuring werewolves.

The hero, Adam, is a park ranger in a Georgia swamp who also happens to be a werewolf. Using his wolf's super senses, Adam discovers that a witch's coven is intent upon punishing the town for witch hunts committed years ago. At the same time, Sara, a botanist, arrives at the swamp to locate plants with medicinal attributes. Adam is attracted to her from the start, but can't help wonder if she is one of the bad witches.

WITCHING MOON held my attention, though I didn't think it as appealing at the first book in the series, KILLING MOON. Adam and Sara were decent protagonists with interesting paranormal abilities, but their personalities were a little bland and their actual love scenes disappointing in their brevity. I loved the fact that the book was set in a swamp (which automatically makes it spooky and romantic), but for some reason the story lacked suspense or tension. It was easy to figure out who was who and what was going on. Nothing was surprising (or exciting). Nor were the villains in this book as interesting as villains in prior books in the series.

Still, I enjoyed the book and will continue reading the series, which includes KILLING MOON, EDGE OF THE MOON, short story "Burning Moon" in the anthology CRAVINGS, and CRIMSON MOON. I'm a fan because I like werewolves, and this is one of the few series which features them as heroes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Witching Moon (Berkley Sensation), October 10, 2005
This review is from: Witching Moon (The Moon Series, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Haven't finished reading it, I actually put it aside because it is very stiff, doesn't grab my attention and I feel like the book is talking down to me. I have read previous Berkley Sensation books (which is why I purchased this one) but have not been impressed with this one.

I thought this was a very good book. It was well written with lots of beautiful descriptions and a combo of romance and action. I wish it included the translation for the words that bring about the transformation into a werewolf. Can anyone tell me what 'taranis, epona, cerridwen. Ga. Feart. Cleas. Duais. Aithriocht. Go gcumhdai is dtreorai na deithe thu.' means?
