Book Description

Poetry. A WITCH'S DICTIONARY is Sarah Kennedy's fifth book of poetry. Kevin Prufer called it "...one of the most unsettling, timely, and technically marvelous new books I've read in a long, long time. Sarah Kennedy is unafraid to tackle the enormous crises of our time--war, terror, official lies--and she does so with skill, macabre wit, energy and, most of all, complexity. Sarah Kennedy has always been a poet of great skill and subtlety. This is her best book yet." Sarah Kennedy is a contributing editor to Shenandoah and West Branch. Her work has appeared in such publications as Prairie Schooner, Arts & Letters, and Pleiades. She is an associate professor at Mary Baldwin College.

5.0 out of 5 stars now and then - fantasies of evil, February 9, 2008
This review is from: A Witch's Dictionary (Perfect Paperback)
Sarah Kennedy has written a disturbing series of poems about witchcraft old world style and new. There are many historical incidents of witchcraft and witch-torture memorably "sung" by the poems that are crisply and musically written, creating a juxtaposition of sound and sense that have a long afterlife in one's mind (I almost said haunting). But the really resonating passages imply linkages between age-old practices and superstitions with America today and its siege-mentality. Witch-hunt and terrorist-hunt conflate, with G. W. Bush comparable in several startling ways to King James I of England. An engrossing read - I couldn't put it down.
