Delightful reading,
This review is from: A Witch's Lament (Paperback)
This is a fascinating chronicle from the pen of one of the most talented independent authors that I have come across. The story line is unique and full of suspense, passion and mystery. Without going into the plot on which many of the other reviewers have already mentioned, I would highlight what aspect of the book I enjoyed most. I felt the author has made extensive research to present the narrative in a very film like manner, and I felt as though I was watching a suspense movie. She has made use of historical, anthropological, religious and mythological contexts, and the use of supernatural or magical powers to illustrate the chronicle. I highly recommend it as a delightful read. I cannot wait to read her next novel.

Collins Captures the Magic of Salem in Witch's Lament,
This review is from: A Witch's Lament (Paperback)
I'm a sucker for stories about Salem. I love the town, and it makes such a rich backdrop for a paranormal book. The author makes great use of the setting, winding in elements of Salem's violent history alongside the modern commercial aspects of the town.
The story itself is fast-paced and filled with magical twists and turns. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to reading Collins' next book!

The power of the past can still haunt the present...,

This review is from: A Witch's Lament (Paperback)
Newcomer Skye Temple settles in Salem, excited to be a home-owner after a decade of travelling the world as a writer for `Wandering Minstrel' magazine. She's an official Salem resident, but she feels unsure of her place in the town, and unsure too of her own uneasy feelings and the sudden visions she experiences. The atmosphere in Salem seems conducive to her powers...
Energetic young cop Jerome Phips is investigating a rash of murders in Salem. Handsome, clever and strong, with his buzz-cut dirty-blond hair and his mysterious family history. Jerome Phips and Skye Temple make captivating leads, and I stayed up late turning the pages to find out more about them and follow them through the story. I liked Skye's relationship with her parents. The characters were very well drawn, from Verity with her limp handshake, to the solid camaraderie between Eldon and Jerome. This is a fascinating novel with all the ingredients of a great read: skeletons, thunder and lightning, ancient diaries, and ominous visions. These all make for a dramatic and captivating opening which draw the reader in. Beautifully descriptive writing and a gripping storyline kept me hooked as the narrative built to its climax. The past is historical and spellbinding. The present day is up-to-the-minute with snappy dialogue and realistic situations. If you liked `Witch Child' by Celia Rees, then you're bound to like `A Witch's Lament' by Catherine Anne Collins.

This review is from: A Witch's Lament (Paperback)
I chose A Witch's Lament by Catherine Anne Collins because of its historical and blatantly Pagan undertones; both of these topics, especially together, I quite enjoy reading and learning about. A Witch's Lament was very well historically researched and written and contained genuine passion by the author. The plot was intense and kept me on the edge of my seat, it slowed down slightly right past the middle but quickly got back on track. The characters were strong and vibrant, matching the depth called for in this story, but the sensual scenes that featured the main characters were mediocre; I wish we could have seen Skye and Jerome take it all the way, and the author definitely would have written it well based on the kisses these two shared.
The famous quote by George Santayana, "Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it" summed this book's theme up nicely and it was appropriate for the time frame this book covers. That quote just kept rolling around in my head the entire time I was reading, so I knew I had to mention it in the review. I don't know if the author purposely made it a theme or if it is just a natural occurrence with historical genocides. The religious references that took a big chunk of this book, more specifically the Wiccan references, were respectful of the religion and its beliefs and were perfectly meshed into the story line. I quite enjoyed reading this book and have already started looking into more of Catherine Anne Collins' work.

A Witch's Lament was absolutely spellbinding. Wonderfully written Catherine Collins captivated my attention from page one. Unfortunate, because I found myself up until 1a.m. that night unable to put the book down and needing to get up at 5a.m. If you love mystery but have grown tired of what has become predictable and common place you will absolutely LOVE A Witch's Lament. I have also read Catherine's other book, "The Crystal of Light". She's a refreshing talented writer who doesn't disappoint and I have become a devoted follower of her works.
